Default Shotgun shell question

I just recently moved and found almost 50 boxes of shotgun shells I had forgot I had. They are mostly pheasant/quail, #8 I I think, but also #4. I already have around 500 rounds of 00 for self defense. Are these rounds ok for self defense or should I just keep them for bird hunting or possible bartering?

Are you defending yourself against pheasants or quail? Then yes, they will do the job

Or rabbits That have long, nasty, pointy teeth. For death awaits us all. At the hands (paws?) of rabbits.

The #8s aren't good for much but doves, smaller flushing birds, and skeet/trap. The #4s are good for ducks, geese, pheasants, and humans, if needed. They can do plenty of damage to a person at close range and they won't go through a wall to hurt an innocent by accident. The 00 Buckshot are designed with fewer, but larger pellets, providing maximum penetration and a bit more range.

I use #4s for my home defense shotgun.

I'd use up the #8s shooting clays and the #4s shooting squirrels and grouse. I think I'd want to stick to buckshot for putting down the meth-addled crazies.

Sounds like it's time to start shooting clays/skeet. Fun hobby!

Sadly there are a lot of 12 ga and 20 ga #4, #6, #8 that are LEAD shot.
Not legal for ducks, geese....and in many areas wet land hunting of most anything.

So a lot of game load have been replaces with #steel shot or a non-lead alloy.

Now for my personal preference......Not for debate.

I would not use anything less that 00 buck or 000 for defense...

You want some serious damage...not just a pizzed off bad guy.

I agree with the trap a skeet shooting practice on the #8....
For the others I would set aside 10 boes or so....

The rest I would open and reload with slugs ...and if they are 12 ga....you can get a Lee mold fairly inexpensive.....made to make slugs that load using the shot cup form the bb's

OR
Another option are the lee buckshot molds.... open the end dump out bb's replace with buck shot.

Don't expect to eat anything shot with #8 shot. Your dental bills will cost you big time.
It won't be black pepper you eat in your birds and rabbits.
