We used to make tree forts when we were kids by lashing a couple logs to three or four trees with 1/8" cable (a couple of wraps at least) and laying smaller logs between them. You can do the same for the roof, and drape the tarps over the roof and down the sides for walls.
Ya, move, I did, hate the rain and the peoples republic of Wa.. Ever seen a tree stand for hunting, might look them up. My sis and brother in law live in Minnesota and they build tree condos there, heaters, chairs and stoves, everything.
I have built a shelter for practice based on a similar principle to to the packing crate. I basically cut logs about 7 foot long and laid them on the ground next to each other (each log touching) until I had a platform about 7 feet wide. Then I drove 2 stakes in the ground on each side to prevent the logs from separating. That became the floor of my shelter. I didn't get to test it in the rain, but it seems like it would work. If you had to you could even do another layer with the second layer of logs running 90 from the first layer.
But something I have put in to practice is trenching around my shelter to channel the water around it and off to a downhill side.
You mention you're in the PNW so I'm guessing the reason you want to elevate your shelter is to avoid the ground water? But just to confirm is that the main reason?
And when you say long term...how long are you thinking? A few days, weeks, or months?
I live in the PNW too but where I live we get about 10 inches of rain a year...lol
It's not elevated but here is a shelter my wingman and I built and stayed in during one of the rare times here when it did rain almost straight for three days.
I'm looking to go underground to get the benefits of earth insulation and geothermal heating.
Nice to have year round climate control.
