This man only has 13 YouTube videos, but each one is worth the viewing. He builds a long term shelter that is going to be the first one I try to make. There are 7 parts to it and he builds not only the shelter, but a raised bed, bench, and shows how to make a bow saw using a saw blade that you bring along if you don't want to carry the whole saw.
He uses very few tools, which is the best part of his method, as far as I'm concerned. The video below is the last in the long term shelter series.
I saw these a while ago and loved them. Great ideas, and very little skill required to pull them off. Which is good, because **** Proenneke is amazing, but I don't think I could duplicate his work.
In one of his other videos he makes the tripod chair with one of the sacks as the seat, like a sling chair. I made one of those and it's amazingly comfortable. I have a coffee roaster company near me and he gives the coffee sacks away. But, you can find them on the net for about $3 each.
He's doesn't bill it as a permanent shelter, but as one that he can use for a long time, whenever he wishes. I guess that to me anything that gives you comfortable shelter from the elements for a month or two and doesn't require a great deal of maintenance while you build your 'permanent' shelter is a long term shelter.
Most of the shelters you see in the other bushcrafting videos are for a couple of days, while you wait to get out of where you've gotten stuck.
I fell in awe of the man with the first one I watched. If he didn't live in Wales, I would have begged him to let me tag along and learn from him. I'm sorry he hasn't put any up or answered posts in a while. He is, to me, the consummate woodsman.
I did start carrying bow saw blades in my pack's support pockets after watching this guy.
Step number one, make a saw.
Step number two, build everything else.
Makes sense to me.
