The truth is that unless the defender is something special (like really rich), he would not be the first to be attacked. Chances are the attackers would be infinitely better trained than the defender, trained in the only way that matters - by successfully attacked dozens of defenders before they get to the current one. They would know how locals think and how they fight. And every shot the defender would make would be responder by an avalanche of return fire and result in an immediate death of the defender.

Your post contains two illuminating details:
1. One needs to have an actual, strong wire perimeter in order to get a meaningful alarm: the attackers should not be able to transit the perimeter very quickly (or simply prevent the alarms to go off).
2. Even if alarm is sounded the defender STILL doesn't see the attackers. In order to defeat the attackers the defender MUST to have either a full auto or, at least, a quick-firing weapon (there are ways...).

Let them spray and pray, as long you can stick to a disciplined point and shoot, you're all good.

Having fired full auto, we'll stick with semi - auto. Thanks.

Full auto has it's place, crew served or in a trained squad. Not much use in a family size unit, unless you specifically trained for such. Say from a semi-hardened position with known fields of fire, while others in your family pick particular targets.

I'm pretty accurate out to 200yards semi auto and the wife is pretty darned accurate out to 100. We can both put 50 rounds into a 2" target at 100 yards no problem in under a minute.

She's better than I am with semi-auto shotguns, so that's her "specialty" and goto long gun for the house, a 20" semi-auto 12g.

I suppose when we move out of city limits for some property, we'll revisit our defensive needs.

Anyways, in short, let's say in a SHTF type situation some druggie comes into our neighborhood and starts spraying. If we're not hit by an unlucky shot, then we'd just go do a round about and take him out if need be. 1 shot. He'd be well out of ammo (unless he had a trunk load full), well by the time we got into position.

Semi auto rifle and shoot to kill then ask questions later, head shots preferred
