I have found wheat here in NJ finally, but its a lot smaller than the wheat berries in pictures I've see here on the boards. It's the same shape, but smaller and they are calling it seed. They've never heard the term "wheat berries". Most of the wheat harvested around here is turned into hay bales, they let the seeds drop off. Is the smaller seed good enough to grind into flour?
ok, You've confused me even more! Are Wheat Berries the same as Wheat Seed? They are not little round seeds, more the shape of flat rice. Are they good enough to grind into flour?
Seed wheat MAY be treated with a fungicide/pesticide and is USUALLY dyed a other than natural color i.e. Blue-green or blue or green.
Are you near a feed store? They should be able to get wheat for you the size of the berries is determined by the variety of wheat growing conditions and intended end use the less than less lovely will be used as animal feed, the absolute truth is that the best is kept as seed for next season ( if you plan on a garden there is a lesson there ) then people chow, these have to meet a minimum standard for nutritional value and purity
Yes! Seed, berries, kernels, or just dry wheat where I come from. Same thing.
Now the thing is what is it intended for, seed, feed or food. It most often has fungicide added for planting seed. It frequently has vitamins, antibiotics or even molasses added for feed to animals. It will frequently say double or triple cleaned for people food.
Humans CAN eat any except that treated with fungicide, and preferably not that treated with antibiotics.
