What's your thoughts on trying to cross into Canada when SHTF down here?

Best on foot, or try to drive the available backroads, or maybe take the boat?

Do you really think the U.S. would get so bad, that third-world or underdeveloped countries would look like an attractive option? Furthermore, in this global economy, if developed nations all tanked, why would third-world countries fare much better?

Hey, why don't you try to apply for citizenship in North Korea? When you get there, try to get a hold of Euna and Laura- it helps to be around some fellow Americans while you are assimilating. They might be hard to find though, since they will be very busy doing whatever the North Korean govt considers "labor."

Or you could move to Africa; just watch out for...well... anyone who looks at you with greedy eyes. See, Westerners fetch a nice ransom there, and a RTWK might use you to pay for his next meal. (RTWK = Random Teenager with Kalashnikov.) Southern Africa has a little pirate problem... then in Northern Africa there is Al Quaeda...

I'm certainly not trying to say that America is the #1 at everything... but there is a reason why so many people from "developing" countries are trying to move here. You don't hear much about anyone fleeing from this country to seek shelter in Mexico, Lebanon or Iran. Personally, I would recommend sticking to the more developed or Westernized nations, simply because it is A) easier to assimilate, and B) you don't stick out as much like a sore thumb. In times of adversity, the nail that sticks out gets hammered.

Hey!!
Africa is much more than "Northern Africa with Al Quaeda" and "Southern Africa with a little pirate problem"

Have a look on a map. If you can find Africa then see if you can find Somalia. There is the little pirate problem:thumb: oh and Al Quaeda can be found there as well.

Southern Africa might just be the safest place to live in when the madmen with nuclear weapons start to loose control.

Come and visit here. You will fall in love with Africa. And here in South Africa we have the best looking women in the world. :thumb::thumb:

Everyone always seems intent on bugging out with a rucksack slung into the back of a truck with some rifles and getting onto crowded roads to inhospitable terrain and starting over.

I'm not planning on going anywhere - I got everything I need right at home.

How come nobody ever talks about fortifying their property and digging in? I'd be going Omega Man - Charlton Heston style.

Having said that, if I did have to leave - I'm heading here and taking it over as my own whilst everyone else is still panicking and heading for the hills or supermarkets. :)

I guess you have not seen these two threads about a well located survival retreat with bunker - many pics as well as details about digging in and fortifying, more questions and comments will be welcome also >

and photos and details of the bunker on the survival retreat > http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=42447

And to be on topic, I would not leave the USA and go to socialist Canada or anywhere else even if the empire were crumbling all around, which it seems to slowly but surely constantly doing. See the above two links for reasons why I will not leave!

You would have to have a small army to defend yourself if you bugged in in an urban neighborhood. People would start to wonder why you looked fat and happy while the rest of them were shriveling up. They'd come for you and you wouldn't be able to stand them off for long.

Was hoping to head into mexico/central america for a while before heading into south pacific onboard my boat...seems like mexico at least is just as expensive as here ...personally i am just hoping to find an isolated spot to fish, trap and hunt with no interference (or very little ) from govt....

..there is an island called minerva I think that has started (again) to draw to its shores those of us that want to have community and seperation at the same time..owned and ignored by the kingdom of tonga

...i suppose I must be insane to want to do this since no one EVER EVER seems interested in going along!!

I'm going to hang on for a little longer before going to a small island in the Sea of Nowhere.
Its on a hair-trigger with me at this point, wouldn't take much.

First thing if you don't speak the language do not go in a SHTF situation. Not only will you have it bad in your own country but try making it in another where you don't know the language and everyone knows your a refugee. You would become a slave or worse in that country. With all that said if you speak the language and leaving to some south american country is what you really want to do at least have some valuable skill that would be useful to the natives such as leather working, carpentry, EMT, nursing, or some other medical training. They are not going to have much use for another lawyer or economist coming to town. Get down to the basic grassroots needs of the community, find out what they need and become that person to give it to them. You will be much more accepted and even appreciated.

Umm...not to be Captian OBVIOUS -- but leaving the US now requires you to have a passport or passport card or an enhanced drivers license...all of which now have an RFID chip/tracking device in them. If anyone were thinking of "bugging out" to Canada...ya'll should have thought about that a LONG time ago... prior to the new regulations. Ummm...another Captian Obvious point to make: Don't you think that when SHTF, the borders would be one of the first things that secure and tighten up? Do you think that you would honestly still be able to cross over the border with your "BO gear" and food buckets without being checked? The borders would be the LAST place I would want to be.

So, to answer your question....no, not a good idea.
