Potassium permanginate (can I just call it KMNO4?) - bleach, disinfectant, good on wounds. It's not dangerous to use, you can stick your hand in it and it's fine. Comes as a powder which you mix with water, turns a lovely colour. I don't know about using it for water however.

Vitamin C in place of KMNO4? Not sure how.... Someone else will say but I don't know.

As to water purifying: if a person's prepared to walk around with a bottle of ascorbic acid they may as well walk around with a bottle of water purifying tablets - or a bottle of kmno4.

As to sunlight: don't know. I know it kills chlorine...

Trichloroisocyanuric acid - good for pools, stable form of chlorine tablet for pools I thought. I'm sure you could use it to purify water but dosing would be on the packet.

I use Hydrogen peroxide in my water tank. It's scary but effective, cheap, biodegradable. I think it depends on what water you want to purify. If you were only worried about short term 'lost in the bush' type water access, I'd just put a packet of tablets in.

As an alternative antibiotic, colloidal silver is known to kill most germs - viruses, fungi, bacteria and internal parasites - Fighting viral infections, colds, flu, yeast and fungal infections without side effects or harm to humans, animals or plants, and also promotes wound healing and tissue growth. It can be used for water purification and you can make it yourself.

Hi guys,
This is Stephen, If you are adding vitamin C to a solution of permanganate, it is normal for the endpoint to dissappear when you add too much vitamin C. The brown colour is manganese dioxide. I have no idea what the purple vapor is unless you are some how coprecipitating permanganate with the brown manganese dioxide. Upon heating, the permanganate returns and the purple colour is evident. The purple vapor could be an aerosol or fine mist of the solution. Was iodide used in either the Vitamin C or as an indicator for this titration?

PotPerm is a very potent oxidizer. If you put some powder on your skin, and sweat causes it to get wet, you will get a chemical burn. At least in the concentrations here in the US. You can buy it at any water purifier shop, you just have to be 18 years old.

It's not cheap, about $5-10 per pound IIRC.
