WASHINGTON — Forty years later, Henry A. Moak, Jr., still loves his pound cake.

The Army colonel popped open an old military 'C' Ration can of pound cake from 1969 at his retirement ceremony, and dug in.

Moak pronounced the cake "good."

"It's even a little moist," he said, wiping his mouth. He dared anybody "gutsy" enough to join him, and retired Lt. Gen. Paul T. Mikolashek, who was the U.S. Army Europe commander when Moak served overseas, took an even bigger piece.

I had the guts to eat an MRE from 1985 packaged date. It was Tuna something and had sat in the back seat of my friend's uncle's truck cab who lives out in the middle of Texas. Yeah, it was not an good to look at and the taste was definitely off, but I ate the entire thing and I am still alive. His philosophy was:

If it isn't swollen, and the packaging is intact you can eat it.
From my experience high temps degrade the taste and color, but it doesn't make it non-edible. Now when it comes to nutritional degradation and loss I am not in the position to comment.
