Many years ago I was really into sailing. I studied boat design and eventually designed my dream boat. It was a 52 foot trimaran, ketch rigged for single-handed sailing. It would have cost $180,000 to have it built, and I almost sold my business to build it. But I never did.
The hull construction was foam-core with stitched fiberglass overlay. Stitched fiberglass is much stronger than woven fiberglass and allows for better alignment of the strands along the load lines of the boat. I added two additional layers to the standard hull construction.
In the main hull I provided for extra tanks to be built into what would normally be voids. These tanks could then be left empty for buoyancy, filled for ballast, or used for extra water or fuel capacity. The almas also had additional tanks built in, with pumps and cross connects to allow shifting ballast side to side.
Instead of the almas being attached to the main hull with open spars, they were attached with enclosed wings. The wings each had a queen size birth, and each alma was a stateroom. Obviously it was designed for long distance ocean cruising, not for speed.
It was sort of a modified Piver, and would have looked similar to this Neel.
