Where I live none of the newspapers allow firearms into the classified ads anymore. This makes it real difficult to find guns that can be bought on a person to person level. How is it in your states? Any ideas on how to find firearms etc from private parties? Looking on the internet is not any better. Sites like gunbroker you must ship to FFL's or the auctions are gun dealers to begin with. How would I go about finding them? Any thoughts on this would be great.
Ok, a little market research. I am considering creating a free classified website just for firearms and related. It would be broken out by state so that you could do private sales within your state. How does that idea sound to any of you? Do you think that is a good idea and people would use the site? The whole idea would be to find them in your state. Although I guess you could still go across state lines and ship to FFL if there was something you really liked. Do you think that would work?
I'm afraid that most of the newspapers across the country will adopt this rule, if they haven't already. In my area, about 30 miles from KC, the KC Star will only allow ads from licensed dealers, no private sales. Luckily I stumbled across a site that is very close to what your'e thinking about and its called kcguntrader.com, the only problem is that it seems most people want the same prices(if not more$) than what you could buy the same gun for new elsewhere. You should check out the site, and see if you get any idea's from it, I think more sites/papers like this would be helpful, as it seems like all newspapers are now run by liberal gun hating morons. And it still pisses me off that craigslist won't allow ANYTHING relating to guns whatsoever on its site, not even scopes. These people should realize that if it weren't for private gun ownership, we'd still be an english colony. Sorry about the rant, I give you a big thumbs up for the initiative to start a site to help out fellow gun enthusiasts, and good luck.
I bought some firearms on Gun Broker. One from CA and one from OH. I simply had them shipped to a local pawn shop that has an FFL. They were happy to do it. Just contact a local pawn shop and tell them that you're buying a gun from out of state. They will have you come in and fill out the paper work for a background check. When they receive the gun(s), they'll call and you just go and pick them up. There will probably be a small charge. I paid $20. It's cheaper to get multiple guns as they will only charge you once. If you pick up your firearms on separate days, they will charge you another fee. Easy.
+1 to Gunbroker. My dad and I have bought several nifty toys from them, and if you find someone selling in state you can even ask if they want a FTF. Otherwise you do need the FFL to play middle man. I would check around at local pawn and gun shops to see who has the best deal for a transfer. Some guys go by the gun, some by how many times you come in( my dad found one that will charge one rate for any number of guns if you collect at once.)
It is a nice idea and has probably been tried before. I would imagine that the goober-ment probably stepped in somehow to shut them down. After-all if the majority of the gun sales were FTF, how would they be able to collect taxes and background check money?
1) Look in the local "trading post" type magazines. Most of the ads are from businesses but some are individuals. The prices are usually high though.
2) Craigslist often has firearms listed but they are deleted. You can still use this as the seller will sometimes list a phone number. Just remember to email them quickly expressing interest so the email will get through.
3) You can occasionally find ads on gunbroker from individuals will to do a FTF transfer. GB offers a search function for each state so it wouldn't be too hard to find someone with something to sell.
4) There are many state specific site that have "for sale" sections. Almost all of these are from individuals and this is a very good way to find people local to you with firearms to buy.
I would advise against buying from people you don't know very well locally. Many thieves will sell you a firearm just to find out where you live so they can come back and steal the firearm back.
In addition, it is illegal to purchase a firearm from someone you know to be a convicted felon or otherwise unable to legally own a firearm.
According to [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(d), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30] A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law.
Therefore you can purchase (or sell) a firearm from anyone you don't have a reasonable suspicion of being prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms. If they tell you it is stolen, or you have a good reason to suspect they are a felon or otherwise prohibited then you should not complete the sale.
This is a common police tactic. They will offer a firearm for sale and mention casually that it is stolen and if you go through with the sale they arrest you.
I'm in the process of trying to get a FFL license and during the interview process the ATF official said some states have a law enforcement page where a person can check to see if any item with a serial number is listed as stolen. If in doubt it might be worth checking.
I was also told that the person wanting to sell the gun should ask the buyer if there are any reasons that they should not sell the gun to the person (sort of the same questions we fill out when we buy a gun from a gun dealer).
A few questions...

Any catchy names for this classified site?
If you can pull this off and are able to place some substantial ads in my area, I promise to give you some business. Outside of gbroker, I have been having a really hard time finding private sellers.
I would talk around at work, go to a gun show, friends, or relatives etc. Networking is the key, this should be the easiest part of prepping and the most expensive with the new "Obama Premium"
Good luck
Every range and club has a bulletin board.
Check those they usually have guns listed.
Also a lot of older sporting stores still do it also.
