I bought an Estwing camp hatchet . I chose the Estwing because I've used Estwing hammers for 30 yrs and it came with a belt sheath . When I tryed it out it was like trying to chop wood with a dull butter knife .
How do you sharpen your hatchet or axe ?
Just grind it with a file. Not too hard, just line up the angle of the axe with the angle of your strokes. Sharpening an axe is much easier than a knife.
I've got a GB SFA and there hatchet. In the field I use GB's puck twin stone. At home I use the same Japanese wetstones I sharpen everything else with.
I use a file then the Puck then polish it off with a ceramic stone (you can skip this step if you want though). And yes Estwing hatches/axes are great, but they come as dull as hammers.
Stones until it's close then I convex the edge with progressively finer grades of sandpaper until it shaves hair, I find it's easier to touch up in the field if it's shaving sharp when I head out.
I ALWAYS have every edged tool shaving sharp when I go out with them.
It means they are safer to use and need less effort to use. Nothing worse that trying to use a blunt crock knife. Though I always take a way of getting the sharp in the field.
After using my axe at the end of the day i will strop it a few times on my belt. If you do this often then you wont ever have to sharpen with a stone. Keep it sharp and it will take less work.
I use a file. That reminds me I need to sharpen my Axe.
