People are interested in a singles forum

I posted a thread in the ladies section about starting a new forum area for singles, friendships, groups, and meetups. There has been interest in my post and in P.M.'s. Although there was a singles area on here, people have said that it's a bust. It was hard to find and was invite only, some said no one ever got back to them when they did want in.

There are a lot of lonely survivalists in the world who would like to meet like-minded people. There are also many like me who would like to make some platonic friends and that is hard to do off line. I hope you consider this idea, many of us are interested.

Sounds Interesting. You single? :D:

It would have to have solid Rules.

On-Line dating has generally been poor because a lot of
people just aren't serious or dishonest or don't want to
spend any money thus all the free sites.

If this was my Message Board I'd make one but I'd tell people
straight up that if they are serious they HAVE to post
an introduction video via You Tube or some other hosting site and
become VIPs here and pay for this service.

The other stuff can be done via General Discussion.

Making a real introduction is a good idea, as is paying for the service. Keeping it in the VIP section would be good, I think it would generate a lot more money for this site.

As for my status, I am as un-single as a person could get. :D: Been with my 'ol goat since I was fifteen. I just posted this because some really nice women have talked to me about how hard it is to find a person that is into the same things. It's right here in front of them, just needs to be easier for people to say "hey, I am single and looking."

I'm in agreement. Although I have to disagree with the VIP thing. While I'm not single now, I avoided online dating and Meet-up because of the cost. I just don't have it in my budget, and I bet a lot of others don't either. I'm interested in networking, just not having to pay for it. Maybe restrict it to people with at least 500 posts, or those who have been around a year or more.

A private invitation only social group might be your answer. If it is in the open forum everybody - single, married, or dating their pet chicken, can participate. In a private invitation only social group, the leader or leader and people of her/his choosing can set up the membership requirements and the social group leaders are able to toss out people who refuse to follow the social group or forum rules. The moderators are always available if you have a problem in a private social group but your restrictions and set up rules can be however you want them.

I'm suggesting a private group for another reason also. Posts on the main forum are visible to anyone, member of the forum or not, and are also google-searchable. You can attract a lot of, to put it nicely, odd characters or scary people if it is in the open forum.

Why not make it like how the Darkside is? You can only be a member and its not searchable by google?

Personally, I'm strongly against it for a fairly large number of reasons. A few of which follow:

Any time there is any type of free dating setup, word gets around fast. We'll be attracting all sorts of bottom dwellers and scum of the Earth types. Of which we have far too many already. As well as the inevitable scammers and "escort" types, who ply their trade quietly anywhere they can. Someone getting ripped off by a scammer may try to sue Kev for allowing it on his site. At the very least, we're attracting an unsavory element that contributes nothing to the site in return.

Dating is always fraught with problems. With as few hookups as have already happened here, we've had one disgruntled couple air their dirty laundry publicly and go on a slam campaign against each other.

Dating sites are inevitably about 95% men. You think we have problems now, with hostilities spilling out onto the forums from the religious and political section, as well as the Dark Side. Wait until you have 20 guys vying for the attention of 1 female and they get resentful of each other.

On a dating site there isn't really anywhere for the hostility to go. On this site it's going to spread out anywhere that the people involved come into contact with each other. We're already having a hard time staying on top of that.

See, that is a direction I couldn't even envision. I had to look from a forum perspective because the dating perspective is beyond me. I thought the dating scene was a minefield in the early 80's... sheesh, we had it easy I think.

Having read this, I think I'm going to run make Mr. Mel a steak and some pineapple upside down cupcakes. He needs to know he's appreciated.

I managed a large IRC chat channel back in the mid '90s. Every time a new person would join, all the guys would jump in and want to know age, sex and location. If they were female and single, in the prime dating range, every guy in the room would rush into private chat with her and try to keep her monopolized so she couldn't talk to the other guys.

We were a family friendly chat channel and not even a dating channel. Yet it caused nonstop problems and women finally learned to either refuse to give out info, or just say female and happily married, then refuse all private chats. It was horrid and I felt sorry for them.

Face it guys, when it comes to harassing women, we kinda suck. That's part of why we aren't allowed to post in the ladies section.

Here is the problem with any sort of internet dating from my personal experience:

Claim: I am fit or average body build
Reality: I'm not as fat as most people
Alternative: I am obsessed with working out or some crazy diet

Claim: I love animals
Reality: Ok....only my cats...all 19 of them
Alternative: I am super duper against hunting

Claim: I like to try new things
Reality: I have no life and would like to do what you do
Alternative: I live the night life of the city streets until 2am..sleep is a crutch

Claim: I am a prepper
Reality: I have a few extra cans of food and a cool knife
Alternative: I'll probably waterboard you on our first date to see if we are a match

Claim: I am smart
Reality: I learned how to use spell check easy enough
Alternative: I read a lot of books but can't change a lightbulb

Claim: I am quiet
Reality: I mostly mutter under my breath
Alternative: I am actually a mute

Claim: I am outgoing
Reality: I am friggen crazy
Alternative: I will probably key your car then pee on the hood if this date goes badly

It's hard enough to meet a decent person in the real world, let alone the internet where crafty writing skills and complex camera angles can paint whatever picture a person wants. Remember that dating is about selling yourself, and that is easier to do online when you can't kick the tires and take it for a test drive.

I'm on a couple singles prepper/survivalist sites, they are pretty much dead. they suck, lol. I'm also member of the group on here...singles love connection or something like that? I have no idea what to do in that group, lol. I don't think most people even find it.

I like the idea of being VIP forum, perhaps add an area to the user's profile where they can put in description of themselves and what they're looking for (maybe only viewable by other VIP members?) $5 a month isn't that expensive, serious people would pay for it and it would help weed out those just looking for free sites (and hopefully weed out scammers...especially if user still has to make X-number of posts and be a member for X-number days before being able to view/post in forum)

What I like about this place is it's more than just putting up a profile about yourself or reading other people's profiles.. here you can read peoples' forum posts or talk with them in chatroom, get to know more about someone's viewpoints and personality from open discussions. Gives this place a major leg-up over other sites because it's easier to have a fun or informative discussion without the pressure of it being just about dating.

and just to note, I met someone from here, we dated for 2 yrs. it ended, neither one of us flipped out or aired any kind of dirty laundry... Most people don't go ape**** when something ends, don't punish us for the minority of bad apples out there ;)

It's not meant to punish anyone. It's just to avoid a number of problems. I only listed a few. There are many.

It is a perfect example of just how wrong a singles section would go and how fast. So far, however, no one has crossed the rules to get it darksided.

I don't think a Site suggestion thread has ever been darksided, NOT that anyone should take that as a challenge. It would be more likely to be cleaned up with appropriate smacking. :whip:
