Another question. Looks like some of the ovens have legs. When you use the volcano does it matter if your oven has legs or not? Thanks again!

I also have a VG and a 12" Dutch Oven. If you look in the DIY Section for "DIY Stove" you will see a short video of my VG and Dutch Oven and a stove I made out of some Galv. reducers. I really like the way the VG works. I'll have to cut me a round disc of steel like you did.

^^^ the round plate is just another layer of protection, and makes a fine griddle too!
Here are some more pics of my most recent outing... Used the VG as a grill and firering.... |

Once again, the VG lived up to its name...I took it for 4 days of camping/cooking and fly fishing...
![]() Used it for a simple fire pit, and cooked on it, straight grilling and dutch oven... Had fire in it most of the time, no issues.... Chicken, kabobs, etc...... |

Mike,
Thank you and you are welcome....I'm thinking about getting the cover/smoker thing for it..we'll see... So far, love it, has done everything i wanted it to do and it certainly a big part of any SHTF cooking needs.... I would strongly encourage you/everyone to obtain one.... |

I have one of the older model Volcano's. Got it new in the box at a garage sale for $5. Yeah I saw that bad boy and jumped all over it. That was 12 years ago and I still use it on occasion. I grill small batches of wings, fish, and the usual array of meats. One of the most usefull ways I have encountered is with a Dutch Oven. I actually baked a cake using the volcano and dutch oven. The size of the top of the grill is about perfect for my dutch oven. No wasted heat or fuel. Very efficient and well worth trying. Get to know how to use this combo before you need it. Coals are required to be placed on top of the dutch oven as well as the bottom.

I found this thread while searching for information on charcoal storage, and Lo and behold I have one of these too. Should have tried it out sooner than this, my lazy keester. I bought mine on Ebay, with the propane attachment, for I believe $139 shipped? Free shipping is never free of course.
I want to investigate the charcoal storage issue a bit more. I take it that's a standard five gallon bucket with a tight fitting lid? I'm actually using a plastic tote and storing in my basement, a cool and dry place. Does anyone know anything about how long charcoal will store? The small briquettes that I've used for burning incense will go bad over time; I'm thinking that they absorb water when stored in that simple foil wrapper. What about the grill-type briquets? Any experience with this? Thanks in advance. |

As long as the bag is closed tightly and stored in a cool, dry place...they should last indefinitely! |

I just stash the bags and briqueetes into 5 gal lowes buckets, put on shelf in insulated garage, no issues...I also keep a stash of those weber branded little fire starter tabs..non toxic, odorless, etc..great for starting the charcoal, and other fire starting needs too..

Hmmm never thought of stashing those little Weber fire starter tabs! PSYOP thanks for the great idea! One of the things I love about hanging out on these forums-I want to prep well but there's no way I've ever heard of every cool gadget, widget, or thingie that will help in a SHTF situation. Stop by my house one day and I'll cook you a nice steak, with tater & red wine on my Volcano grill. Veggies grown in my own garden, possibly the tater too.

Great post PSYOP! Make sure you get the right “Dutch Oven” for your volcano! Once you master the heat and get the proper temps you will love it. I have cooked in the back of my pickup while driving down the road while cooking.
A must have! Someone was looking for one, try “Smith and Edwards” in Ogden, Utah. |
