For the first book, do not worry about speed at this time. You are developing your writing style, and this will make writing the next few books go much faster.

That said: I do think if you want to make a living doing this you will need to crank out 1 or 2 books a year. (Regular sized books, not a trilogy packed into one big book.) Again your writing style for this series is shaping up, and you will get faster the more editions you write. The hardest part will be making the transition to writing full time vs. working a full time job and writing on the side. Once you are writing full time the books will be published much faster.

My Wife and I are making this transition right now. She is an Accountant, but her company eliminated her department last month. Dear Wife and 4 other wonderful women, got laid off a month before Christmas. So instead of having her getting another job with some ungrateful corporation, she is going to start her own accounting business on a small scale. Money will be tight for a while, but I have faith in her work ethic and talent, and I know it will work out in the long run. I am so confident in her that we are spending even MORE money building her a state of the art home office, with new computers, a desk/workstation that has adjustable height for ergonomics, filing cabinets, shelving, etc, etc,...

Gotta run. Heading to Lowes for electrical supplies. Can't have a "modern" office with only one outlet on the wall, and one light fixture on the ceiling!

I'll be paying whatever you price the book to.
Having a convenient spot to split the book is good, I doubt many would look at it as a money grab. Offering 6 separate 100 page books like many other do would look bad. Making 2 books from a 600 page novel is a bit different. For me I would rather have the 600 page - always like reading long style novels vs. a short series - but that's me

So right now i average about 8 bucks per Lamour books and about 10 bucks for a Childs book, and almost double that for hardcover. Not the same genres or even close to the other books in my collection. War and Peace, The Art of War etc, but theyre all in my genre, which is whatever trips my trigger at the time. Ive already done my initial confused run through TAoW and just finished the straight through read of TAoW. Next will be the referencing back and forth read to eliminate confusion then will be the straight through read with understanding. At that point, it will become another book that will either be retired to the shelf or reread many more times for the pure pleasure, although with TAoW the pleasure is quadrupled due to the amount of my liberal friends it will melt down when they find out ive read it. So basically what im getting at is, for me, if it trips my trigger i dont care what the price is or how long the book is. The hard copy of TAoW that i bought, i paid $100 for. My buddy says its well worth $100 but not a collector piece. I didnt buy it for collector value though, i bought it because i always wanted to read it and, it was an old, well worn edition and the cover looked even cooler being worn and dusty. So whatever the length or price or cover art, im in with SS. You can ship me my copy on a yellow legal pad witten sideways if ya wanna.

It seems as if Ms Sylvia hasn't grasped the concept, or dire circumstances, that surround her. She may have, but it feels like "she works for .gov and is untouchable", in her eyes.
I'm looking forward to finding out, either way.

Default UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE and Comments--

UPDATE UPDATE follows comments below--

--harbinger, looking at all possible options, have inquiry in on KU machinations, and digging for information on various forums, giant pain. Thank you, H.

--10/22, I have considerable concern that 'more time to write' might allow me
to simply be more picky. I don't know yet. I have considerable confidence in some things I am doing, time management is not one of them. And yes paying lots of attention to 'length/duration/price' issues and have been for some time.
This book is completely outside the genre, length/complexity metric. We shall see. Best of luck on your new/wife's venture--accounting is another profession that hugely rewards diligence, responsibility. You will do well.

--w3kmp, exactly.

--Nomad/M much thanks, trying to find out if possible to have 4.99/4.99 BUT FIRST BOOK IN Kindle Unlimited, second book not, and still have FULL BOOK, in other words books 1 and 2 in a single volume at a reduced price FOR THOSE WHO KNOW WHAT IT IS, LIKE FORUM MEMBERS--so far no answer, but I suspect KU does not allow any material in KU program to be included in a 'not KU' product. Thousands of pages of Amazon/other BS these days. Just FFFF.

--cowboypapa you are a monster reader--I suspect there are many here. Thank you on pricing. Very amusing that your liberal friends would be horrified by ArtofWar--means they know nothing about it, of course, why am I not surprised. A book of strategy, and psychology. I don't have any liberal friends of any persuasion. I find irrationality, first disturbing, finally, dangerous. I commend you for your patience. "Yellow legal pad" --awesome.

--scruffy--the marketing problem is 'genre recognition'--people in general do not respond to the unfamiliar. 99 percent of the books in this genre are the male equivalent of, in the best case, Westerns, in the worst case, male romance novels, purely fantastical. Two exceptions, "The Dog Stars" quite brilliant, very irritated that he got to my plane arrest cable first, and "Station Eleven" also brilliant but clearly written with a woman's voice. But they were both legacy published, well known writer's, and I am not. We shall see.

--cowboypapa, you are on fire!

--htfire, believe me, she's getting it now. At the end of these installments, she will have about the most severe case of psychic whiplash a human can experience. NOTE ON HTFIRE COMMENT, WILL BE REPEATED, THIS UPDATE SETS UP A VERY SHORT UPDATE WHICH IS A GIANT SPOILER. IT NEEDS TO BE REFLECTED UPON. PLEASE NO SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS--about the spoiler. Please allow everyone to reflect on their own. Thank you.

UPDATE BEGINS HERE, BACK TO TONY, AND SYLVIA:

You see, Sylvia, the patriarch of my family was incinerated in the first great purge of 1391. He died in his library, in Seville. He burned to death, saving scrolls, and parchment, and pens, and ink, and vellum, and all the finest tools and methods of recording history, and all those records of history which he and my family had gathered for centuries. He is, in my family of many generations, our most honored figure, and our patron saint.
“So you can see why I returned immediately to my uncle in Mexico city. And asked how together we might be of service. I now fully understood my uncle’s horror, and his guilt. He had assumed that it would be our obligation to find a place in the world of The Book of Silver and its Makers, and that our place could only be our participation in a great crime. Now I knew he was wrong. My uncle is a very fine police officer, a splendid administrator, as honest as one can be in the fetid moral stew of my country, but I suffer to admit he is not gifted with imagination or an appreciation of nuance. He had missed the fineness of The Book of Silver, he had sensed only its power.
“And once again you can see the precision of The Book Maker’s design. My uncle prefers the broad and the bold, he would wear red, when black would do, he might shout, when he should whisper. My uncle knows our family history, but he is not devoted to it. If the Book Makers had sent my uncle a first edition of Milton’s Areopagitica, or a unique artifact saved from the fires of the The Inquistion, my uncle would finally have considered the monetary value, he would have assumed a bribe, and not a gift. But I knew that whatever our participation in this new world would become, and crime it might well be, it would be no crime as that word is generally understood. And I knew I had no choice, Sylvia. And I knew it would be a grand adventure. And it is my hidden nature that I might seek adventure to the point of my own destruction. Such is life.
“And now Sylvia, allow me to introduce one of our companions on this journey. Like all of us, I can use only those tools which are available to me, yet best serve my purpose. Please study her closely. Sylvia, I show you: Theresa. Theresa, The Foot.”
The glass privacy shield scrolled down.
For several seconds Sylvia tried to comprehend and could not.
A small shiny face, as small as a child’s, painted or dyed black.
No. That wasn’t it. The black face was a tattoo of a skull.
The skull tattoo covered Theresa’s face from chin to brow.
Theresa’s teeth shown whitely, they had been filed into points.
Theresa leaned into the passenger compartment.
It was like watching a lizard crawl over a wall.
Symbols on Theresa’s wiry arms were so densely layered they blurred into a single pattern more reminiscent of scales, than pictographs or letters. Her manicure was perfect: long nails refined into glassy black talons. Theresa held a framing hammer by the head, she leaned in further and stroked Sylvia’s cheek with the handle. Theresa’s eyes were hazel. Theresa’s voice was sandy, wise, and deep.
“Buena’ dia’, Sylva.”
“And good evening to you, Theresa. Imagine this, Sylvia: our sweet Theresa was once, very long ago, a victim of Luis The Foot. And in some strange and perveted alchemy of mutual enchantment, she became his student. And now she performs a version of his job. She insures compliance, you see. She insures obedience, and respect. For me. Luis The Foot slipped his leash, but Theresa The Foot wears mine. I assume it cannot surprise you that in all the complexity and corruption that is Mexico, a senior Federal policeman, my uncle, should also have a nephew, superficially a man of finance and culture, who is also a criminal. In this case, a senior Cartel chief. Very senior. And that Cartel chief would be me.
“And I have a very particular duty within my hierarchy. I do not love Theresa, or those like her. I simply need her, and those like her. The fact is that I detest the corruption in which I live and which I cannot escape. So I have insured that my particular duty is to reduce as much as possible the friction, the violence, the horror that has become the popular image of my country. I am a specialist, then. I am a chief of personnel, I believe in the United States you call it ‘human resources?’ And my particular region of interest is the South and Southwestern United States. And that is why the Makers of The Silver Book had selected, first, my uncle, and through him, me.
“You see The Makers Of The Book wanted me to find someone, my uncle said. Someone who could assemble and train the depraved army of men you had imported into the country of your birth in order to degrade it. Someone who could limit their contact with the authorities, teach these men how to ingratiate themselves into their new home. And finally, assemble and lead them on some great task, which together we would invent, the magnitude of which would require them all. And I knew this great task could not possibly be to serve your ends, Sylvia. It could only be to destroy these men and thus your mission, and finally, you. Eliminate them. Reduce them to ashes. To less than a memory.
“And over many years I had come to know of precisely the man for this purpose. He had been an American police officer, in the city of New Orleans. He had been ingratiating himself for years through our hierarchy. He had begun as drug courier, side-lined as a pimp, quickly established himself as a ruthless assassin of informants. Have you ever heard the expression “Camina con el Diablo,” Sylvia, no of course not, and why would you, on the street it might be said “Cam con Diablo” or simply “con Diablo” and it is not said to be humorous or amusing or witty, it is said with fear and respect. It means “a man who walks with The Devil.” A man who is blessed by The Devil. Who enjoys The Devil’s protection in a way which appears to be the most extreme good fortune and good luck. And serves The Devil, with joy in his heart. This was exactly that man.”
“Years ago he killed two of our informants, wearing his police uniform, was seen by many and terrified them all, no one would speak against him. He killed an informant in a limousine worth some fifty thousand dollars belonging to a competitor, burned the vehicle, the incident should have started a war. Two days later the competitor was stabbed to death by his mistress in a jealous rage and she started a fire which incinerated both herself and her crime. Or so it seemed, you see. Was it him, a Devil’s Hand? Or was it The Devil himself, using some other instrument on his behalf?
“He was known to be a student of popular culture, both his and ours, of music, of fashion, he dressed flamboyantly but tastefully in his own peculiar way, circulated through the New Orleans music scene, maintained a perfect cover as manager of several local bands and a night club. In our particular culture savagery and sadism are not only respected but worshipped, as I have described, our soldier’s compete with each other for the inventiveness of their torture videos, now posted all over the world, and his were the very finest.
“He beat a man to death, hanging from a ceiling beam, it took two days. The video was set to a popular song, I believe by Katy Terry or Berry, I am not a student of popular culture, perhaps I am mistaken as to that name, but this video made him a star. He identifies his videos with a kind of symbol, it is a Chinese glyph, very simple, a slash through a square, derived from the mah jong tile signifying “Dragon” or “Red Dragon,” he is not educated in a classical sense so clearly he must have searched for it in a book, it surely relates to the dragon tattoos he wore when he was young and has since almost completely concealed.
“All who knew him loathed him. Feared him. Respected him. He was a smiling skull, animated among all mortal men. He was, in other words, an ideal master of the depraved, the perfect monster to train and lead those less monstrous then himself. This was the man you have been conspiring with, Sylvia, a man who walks with The Devil, a true Devil’s Hand, this was who you have empowered to molest and destroy your own country, to provide an escape and a new venue for the worst men of my own, to torture and murder the men and women of both our countries and find bliss in their agony. His name of course, was Tim Bassinger. You will speak to him soon…

VERY IMPORTANT: this sets up a huge SPOILER, in the next UPDATE. The UPDATE WILL BE BRIEF. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT IN PRIVATE, AND DO NOT COMMENT OTHER THAN MAYBE....OH SHT....OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
THANK YOU. DCB.

To those of you who have found Injured Reserves, thank you.

Unhappy Cruel & Unusual punishment

D.C.-
First, thanks for the update... an interesting morsel, to say the least.

Secondly, there is a certain, (almost), sadism in requesting that we refrain from public speculation. From respect grown over the prior 18 months I will comply... grudgingly.

Thirdly, and off topic, I wonder if I am the only one seeing the continued concerted campaign of animosity, disinformation and encouragement of insurrection from those who would be masters and their minions? Having, at one time, made a living as a conjurer and illusionist, I recognize many principles of stagecraft oozing out from the bottom and sides of our current public "information" sources. This is neither new nor unique.

Conjuring is one of the oldest forms of entertainment. It was first mentioned in writing in the Westcar Papyrus nearly 4,000 years ago.

This records how the great magician Jajamanekh recovered an ornament lost in a lake by splitting the lake in two and stacking one half on top of the other.

After picking up the jewel, he returned to the shore, clapped his hands, and the water fell back into place!

Rulers have used conjuring to both entertain and control the peasants ever since.
Here is an example..."The leaked file containing unverified allegations of Russian attempts to compromise U.S. President-elect Donald Trump was authored by Christopher Steele, a former Russia operations officer for Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency, the Wall Street Journal reported late on Jan. 11.", (might be behind a pay wall... if so, sorry).

Fourth; for what it's worth D.C. rough archive is about 60% complete.

DC, im from and still live in northern california. Although we're behind enemy lines, at least its northern and not southern california. We still have more liberals than we want but theyre mostly few and far between. 3 of them in particular i cant do anything about because they are my step daughters. I find them rather entertaining and its very easy to make them cry. All 3 are native american but except for the war paint they wear when going out clubbing or to the mall you would never know it. They call their god "Kardashian". One of them lives with their mother and i, along with her 6 year old daughter who calls me papa. The 6 year old eats her carrots right out of the ground, dirt and all and prefers her steak as bloody as possible. The other day she got her new yoga pants all bloody when we skinned her first jack rabbit. Her mother came unglued when she was informed that yoga pants are warm and quiet when hunting in the woods with her bow. When mom and auntys start twirling their hair so tight that their liberal brains vapor lock, its just proof positive that im raising the grand daughter right. And its freakin funny as hell too. Me n the grand daughter love a good laugh!

--tortminder, understood on conjuring, exactly, see email "pyramids" and it was a long time ago, beginning of story, recall multiple references "pyramids/stone knives/etc." in this story--IMPORTANT, tort, reference/proper name/the Orange One, please edit. No proper names/parties/religions and so on. You know why.
NO SPOILERS, Tort!!!!!! Many different reading styles/speeds/etc. Shame on you.

--cowboypapa--hysterical and grim, "the Kardashians"--part of torminder's conjuring trick box, see above, dumbing down, etc. The yoga pants/rabbit blood rocks. I have a buddy just left SoCal a few years ago, had to say for kid/schools/etc. Part of first registration wave in late nineties, had to register many many items. Lives in Idaho now, Idaho also on my very likely final destination list.

GENERAL NOTE: IMPORTANT, Ok, I am allowed to do/discuss spoilers--see how this works, I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND, WHEN, IN THIS STORY, AND IF I HAVE TO 'EXPLAIN' MORE IN FINAL TEXT.

GENERAL NOTE: Does everybody understand now--the way the story is written, and from Tim Bassinger's point of view, he, Tim, went AND FOUND THE CARTEL AND CLIMBED THE CARTEL ladder because he was ambitious.
Let's start here. THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED. AT ALL. THE CARTEL WENT AND FOUND HIM. Does everybody understand that? Now think about that, and what it means, in the context of this story. Think about it IN PRIVATE FOR NOW....tortminder.

How can you understand what we think, if we are not allowed to speculate?

I read the last installment right before going to work this morning, and I will read it again to be certain, but I think I know exactly what is happening, and just how farsighted the Gehrs' are. (They are chess players, checker players will never get it...)

--10/22, if you see this, YOUR COMMENT IS PERFECT--"chess" "farsighted"---
without detailing BEFORE IT IS SEEN IN THE BOOK LANGUAGE, exactly what happened.

Does that make sense? I literally need to know that the readers here, understand that "something else is going on....in a big way" without spelling it out, so that other readers can process this story at their own pace.

So, it is very good that everyone picks up that "something strange is going on"--but please do not describe EXACTLY WHAT THAT MIGHT BE, at this point, so that we can allow other people to think about it on their own.

Does that make sense?

So, yes, the Gehrs, and The Men On The Hill, ARE PLAYING CHESS, that would be the best language, FOR NOW.

Thank you, 10/22. If can pull this off, it will be 'very good'--there are very few stories like this. But it is also 'very very complicated' and etc.

DC. I understand (see) what is going on. Although I mentioned that a while back in comments. It just all clicked together in my old brain. I'm like that. I give thought to something, thought become a brain novel. LOL

Still reading. Still on patrol.

--Thankyou 2Medicine!!!! Yep. Something is going on. The whole end of book
is long long series of 'reveals' on 'what was REALLY going on'--nuff said at this time. Many many layers. Not just Tony/Cartel/Sylvia/Tim. Good job, 2Med.

GENERAL NOTE: if/when book is read normally, in days or a week or two, should play like a fireworks display--set up set up set up than a series of GRAND FINALES....BOOM BOOM BOOM. Ok, getting ahead of myself....
