I'm looking to buy some hand held radios for me and my prepper buddy, we live about 2 miles apart. I need to know what radios you all would recommend from say Academy, ****s, or Bass pro?
Exactly. More like 2 for $70, and with a better antenna, quite good range. I can hit a repeater 9 miles away and talk for 100 miles on 2 meters. Sturdy, cheap and plenty powerful. When the SHTF, Hams will be who you want to communicate with.
20 ft mast with 1/4 wave VHF anttenna with a ground plane kit (Can use top rail for chain link fence and guy wire it for stability)
RG8X coax, with proper connectors
Reducer to Mini UHF fitting on radio
5 watts should get the job done
2 watts will likely work too, given the obstructions and terrain
GL,
EB
PS
Ham for 10 years
