Elysium: A left wing fantasy

I was warned not to see this piece of crap, but went anyway.

Crappy movie, but it does provide a revealing look into the leftist mind.

Set in 2154, the liberal/progressive/socialist cities are exactly where you'd think they be after a century of leftist policies: all are worse than Detroit is now. No money for infrastructure, rampant gangs, graffiti, corruption, etc.

But all the elites, which I'm assuming were UN types and other liberals, fled to a space station where they can live lives similar to those who grew up in the 1950. Yet left wingers hate the idea of the 1950s, right? Just one of the few ironies about what happens when statists rule.

Also, all white people, except Matt Damon, are evil. All minorities are nobel and smart and want freedom and liberty.

So the nobel minorities on Earth want the free health care on the space station, but the white people won't let them. So - and it takes most of the movie - they devise a plan to overthrow the elites.

Free health care for all!

This was the most overt propaganda I've ever seen. And while it didn't come from a statist government, it was something Leni Riefenstahl would have been proud of.

And the left wing nuts are wetting themselves discussing the movie's "message":

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-kim/rethink-review-emelysiume_b_3730374.html

So the leftists love this movie, which cost $115 million - much of which went to One Percenters Matt Damon and Jodi Foster - because it shows class inequality.

Liberals/progressives/socialists and Hollywood are indeed a bizarre people...

There must be something wrong with me.

I went and saw the movie last Sunday. I liked it.

It wasn't the most awesomest movie I've ever seen, which quite possibly would have to be Lord of the Rings, but it wasn't bad. I thought the bad guy with the samurai sword was a bit much, but hey, samurai swords are pretty cool, no matter what century you live in.

I hadn't read anything about how liberal it was, or that it was some message movie, and candidly I just watched the movie for what it was - escapist fare with space scenes. I thought that Jodi Foster played an excellent heartless bitch.

If I'd known in advance I was going to see a liberal wet dream filled with subliminal messages, I probably wouldn't have liked it at all.

Glad I saw it before I read these threads on the forums......

Groucho said it best: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

Well, don't take it too hard, I have a freind that just completely missed all the Lefty/New-Age imagery and messaging in "Avatar" ;).

Groucho said it best: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".
Well then, Groucho must've just been talking about actual cigars, because todays televison and movies are RIFE with subtle (and not-so-subtle) leftist propaganda and social engineering efforts, exceptions are very rare. I caught the exact same propaganda message the OP refers to just from the TV commercials, I didn't even need to see the full movie.

Precisely why I flat refuse to continue to support them by going to the movies. Every movie you go see is a loyal vote FOR more Hollywood and Liberalism :thumb:

"Conservatives" can be bizarre as well.

And "Progressive" and "UN-Constitutional"....those are just words. ;)

If you don't stand for what you believe, you are destined to serve those who do. Regardless of their beliefs.

I went to see it in one of the larger theatres with the larger screen, rocking seats, surround sound, extra leg room etc. and I really enjoyed it. Near the end when Damon was shooting the bad guy with the rifle with the exploding rounds, a guy on the other side of the room said out loud "I want one of those" to which I quickly, and even louder, replied "Amen". Everyone had a good laugh.

I want to see it looks like a good movie.
To me its a modern take on royalty living up in their castles while the peasants starved and tried to pay taxes and/or rent. Even having to had to work for free on church land ,leaving them less time to work on their own land to earn more money to pay the over lord.

Its a good action flic. The director has a very raw, direct, style.

Its extremely similar in visual style to District 9.

Plus the huge space station is EXTREMELY similar in design to Niven's "Ringworld."

1. Rotating ring, living space curves around.
2. Open top, air kept in by rotation (ringworld) - though I notices an inner ring pumping something...
3. "Magic" chambers that cure everything.

The movie was a marginal action movie at best and that 'at best' is only if you want to look past the GLARING lack of back stories on the main characters. I haven't even begun to relate the 'at best' part to the fact the the plot is a pile of dog excrement.

To begin with the main Character "Max" has no background other than he's an ex con (for what we don't know), white and was somehow raised by latinos and the latino grandmother imparts some hella wisdom on him that makes him want to save the day. (but not enough wisdom to avoid prison).

The plot is a mismatch of save children with free healthcare, let the poor have a chance, promote the stereotype of evil corporations in bed with big 'eluted to' right wing types in government. Oh and lets add in a action star who somehow has the ONLY key to what appears to be a very easy way to stop the rich evil minority from controlling the well intentioned poor minority (both literally and physically)

The best one is that Jodie Fosters character is what the somebody thought D ick Cheney and Karl Rove would produce if they had a female baby. But, this character comes off as 1/2 Hillary Clinton with the other half being Nancy Pelosi.

The three main evil villains are so stereotypical that it's laughable. Also (spoiler alert) the two main evil corporate government types die too soon and in very anticlimactic ways. The final evil mercenary villain Kruger dies is a 1980's Stallone/Swartz type movie way, but somehow they manage to make this anticlimactic as well.

Then there is the military suit that Damon wears. Really, this could have been much better as fitting into the story line. Like Max (Damon) was somehow ex military and wrongfully sent to prison and not he's back into the machine that he used to stop his unit from killing civilian that the army lied and sent him to jail for. He then gets revenge on the very person (Foster's character) that sent him there. BUT NO....we get a radioactive Max's only choice is to have this suit sewing into him so he can save himself (and humanity as a bonus). The fact that he has no history of any military and or ANY training be damn. One suit attached to his body and instantly one bad a$$.

Like most crappy plots this one has the usual, 'oh crap' we've wrote ourselves into a corner so lets add some random character to move the story along and hope nobody notices 'WTF' where did this person come from moment.

Finally the ending is SO PREDICTABLE as to be nothing more than an internal 'I told you so' after you figured it out once Max was on the clock to save himself from a certain death.

Is it worth $10+ to see...no unless you like these types of movies no matter what the seat costs you.

Is is an ok Netflix/Redbox movie. Sure don't expect great action, plot, acting or ending.

5 of us went to see the film (free tickets)...4 of were instantly moaning and we all began to share what we thought of the movie. We all saw the pushing of Obamacare, but somehow Republicans (who the dem's picture as the elites) are trying to stop miracle, life-saving healthcare from the masses.

The other left wing stuff is the earth's overpopulation...I could explain some of the other things we "saw", but most of them have already been explained in this thread.

If it is "just a movie"--then why did 4 out of 5 of us in the car (people with different ideas about life except my wife and I are similar) come to the same conclusion?

Wouldn't miracle health care lead to more healthy people and over population?

Sounds like the left hand doesn't know what the right foot is up to.

from one of my posts in this thread...

Injustice at the movie theater.
...

edit: Ironically, the situation you've described in the movie...the way the socialists like to portray the "evil rich"..is pretty much how it would end up if the socialists ever got their way and passed everything they wanted. "Socialism is for the people" you know, "NOT the socialists." Human nature prevents socialism's utopian vision from ever becoming a reality...it inevitably becomes a mass of poor overseen by the elite party members (look at any Communist Nation).

I've not seen it nor do I plan to...more because I'm sick of Matt Damon than anything to do with the movie.

However, on the statement by some on this thread that "it's only a movie". How many movies have you seen in your life really got to you and maybe influenced you in some way. I can tell you that I can name several right off the top of my head..."Saving Private Ryan", "Gone With the Wind", "Terms of Endearment", "Jaws", "Patch Adams", "Dances With Wolves", etc. Whether we realize it or not, our brain does not always separate the nuances within entertainment and it's the easiest way to propagate an idea, a theology or an agenda.

I'm not saying don't go see this or that movie, I'm simply saying to always, always, always, realize that the writer, director, production house and financial backers are not always just making a movie for the fun of it. Look at what country now owns more theaters in this country than the US...China. Now, you think that production companies are not going to make movies that appeal to the Chinese government mindset????? I'm just saying to keep your eyes open and you won't get surprised.

The interesting thing is the director is an Afrikaner. The bad guy mercs were Afrikaans, complete with flag on their ship, and the head merc was the hero in District 9, also directed by this guy. Definitely an agenda.
The plot was horrible, but the sci fi tech and action were entertaining. The director has a good eye for melding next gen sci fi with old world grunge.

Absurd, the stereotypes, with Daman being the only ****** on the 'good side', and Asians being portrayed as tech nerds. What a loathsome set up.

Elysium was a Roman concept of an after life where you met friends who had previouslt died. They put coins on the eyes of the dead so they could pay Charon who was the boatman over the River Stix. Elysium was on the other side.
i'm glad I found out that's not what it's about. I won't waste my money.

As I see it, the Elysium-dwellers are not merely the "haves," they are the super-rich. The middle have been wiped out. Right now, in South American cities like Rio de Janeiro, The wealthy live in walled compounds on the hilltops amid lavish luxury. The valleys and lower slopes of the hills are carpeted with shantytown favelas where the poor dwell. To avoid mixing with the poor (and maybe being attacked by them) the compound dwellers travel from hilltop to hilltop by private helicopters. The military serves as their private army. Elysium simply takes this model to the extreme and makes it worldwide. It says that Rio de Janeiro is the future. Go to Google Images and type in "favela" to get an idea of what they look like.

...and Brazil is a socialist country. :thumb:

as I said before...the movie tries to portray their view of capitalism run amuck, but instead portrays what socialism looks like when it's fully implemented.

(the lefties always accuse us conservatives/libertarians of doing and being exactly what they do and are...and probably don't even realize it, some of them)

Or it's simply as Orwell stated so baldly: All the "isms" are just shuck and jive. The purpose of power is power. The various isms, communism, socialism, fascism and so forth exist to put a tiny elite in power and keep them there forever. All power, wealth and prestige are concentrated in the hands of a tiny group and the great bulk of the populace are fobbed off with a diet of feel-good propaganda, hate and war talk, religion, bread and circuses or all of them depending on local requirements. In the fully-developed Elysium scenario, they don't even have to be given that much.

Mountainman is correct, Saint. Movies are the syringe from which otherwise foreign ideals and concepts are injected into an increasingly addled, uninformed societal corpus. Movies, and the harpy-shrill opinions of pop music stars are one of the most effective game changers.

Videogames are now supplanting movies, providing the user with a more personal, intimate experience, and we're witnessing a marked increase in sophisticated philosophy and agenda within videogames.

wow thats a very good post. and no, Mountain man is not correct, he is paranoid about a fictional movie.

This movie will have no more effect on the culture at large that the movie Logan's Run did. same concept.....remember?

Videogames are now supplanting movies, providing the user with a more personal, intimate experience, and we're witnessing a marked increase in sophisticated philosophy and agenda within videogames.
yep I agree its all bad if one starts to take it seriously, but I also agree its all what you make of it.

The Freedom to speak, make a movie etc. about what ever in this country has always had its supporters and its critics.

Everyone knows Hollywood is a libtard left leaning society with illusions of utopia, why? because if one has ever been there they try to live in a big glass jar and think the world should follow suit.

understanding this fact and the fact that they will try to promote the lifestyle they dream of by the only medium the rest of the country will pay attention to should not be a shock.

take it with a grain of salt, understand that its a movie and cannot possibly hurt you, and then enjoy the parts that entertain you.

soon the paranoia will subside after you leave the seats and walk into the fresh air again....

{WGPM : World’s Greatest Propaganda Ministry}

FWIW - Americans are victims of the world's greatest propaganda ministry (admired by Goebbels and Hitler), and have no awareness of the transformation of the nation from a republican form, to a democratic form, to a democratic socialist form, and now, to a "People's Democratic Socialist Republic" sans the pesky limitations of the U.S. Constitution.

Not one in 100,000 Americans know of or can accurately define what a "republican form" of government is (no, it's not a constitutional republic).

BUT A GOOD CIGAR IS GREAT.

The people behind the movie and the star have said; Its a message movie, it has an agenda. They are proud of it. Lets take them at their word.

I will see it on video later. I don't want to add to its numbers right now. But I enjoy agenda movies. I would read Al Gore's book, even though he is certainly an elitist. Off the discount rack only however, I would not want his agenda to become a best seller. Just as this movie will fail at the movies, but will be rented by many.

As far as a future world of little freedoms for the average man ... Who is working on that now ?

Which side wants to limit your land size, your house size, your garden size, your weapons, your vehicles, your travel, your internet, your food storage (you selfish hoarder), your precious metals, your ammo, your water tank size, the height of your flag pole, etc, etc ?

But of course your betters have good and valid reasons for doing all these things, just sit quietly at their feet while they instruct you on why you are so bad and self centered for wanting these freedoms at the disadvantage of the poor and needy. Don't you understand that they must be in complete control just to make things fair ? You greedy little monster, you must be punished. How dare you want to live in the country by your own rules.

OK, fair enough, I take your point,as well. But.....(always gotta be a 'but':D:), the key characteristic of subliminal propaganda is it's ability to affect views without the viewers awareness. The fact that it even exists is cause enough for concern, and we can't discount the possibility that our views have been to some degree affected by the decades of exposure we've had.
And though you me and (presumably) the rest of us here see right through the BS and take it all simply at face/entertainment value, it's affect on the views (and voting patterns) of those around us, will obviously and ultimately have a discernible affect on the rest of us,too.
As I said, it's influence should not be under-estimated. Look at the societal changes (both good and bad) that have been brought about since we've been born, largely through the video media.

"AVATAR": WALKED THE HELL OUT with 3 other active-duty Marines and our wives. It was SOOOO blatantly anti-American, leftist, eeeeevil US Military propaganda that none could sit through this indoctrination of liberal lies, falsehoods and ideals, thinly veiled as "entertainment."

........"ELYSIUM"? Even the reviews are sickening. I'll save myself the anger, and gloat in knowing that even hard core, America-hating left wingers have condemned this movie as insulting and obvious propaganda.
