Over the last two weeks ive sold three knives that i have made here in the UK,with the money that i have made im going out tomorrow to buy some new kit.
I will be buying a small anvil, bench sander,a buffer polishing attachment and a vise, the vise was not in stock so ill have too wait until thursday for this.
Ive started to clear out my brick out building so that i can set it up as a work shop.
Ive posted a few pics of some bits of kit that i have already and ill post pics of the rest of the kit as i get it, also ive posted a picture of the type of knife ive been selling, the reason i picked this type of knife is because they don't have handles so are quicker to make but once my work shop is up and running ill be making Bushcraft knives and so more unusual knives.
the pics are of my home made forge of which i will replace as i start to sell more knives for an indoor gas forge,my whetstone wheel, some of the knives ive been selling and my new gripper tongs which i got in the post this morning.
It seems for black smith tools like the tongs the USA is the place to buy from, these tongs were made by cooper tools USA,i got these so i can put the twist in rail road spikes.:thumb:
Thats awesome! I see that little forge setup you have...How did you get it, or how did you make it? My little brother (10th grade) is really interested in blacksmithing, and he has been trying to figure out how to make a good forge with bellows, basically just what you have! Do you just use wood to feed it? Thanks for the help Sticks!

Heres the bits and bobs i picked up today,as i said they didn't have the vise in that i wanted and im glad because i paid a few quid more and got a 1 ton rated one.
I got my belt sander with a grinding wheel on it and i bought a buffing kit which is now attached to the part were the grinding wheel was on my whetstone, the last picture is part of the buffing kit,the wheel is the first one that you use and the one on my whetstone is for finishing, the other thing in the box is the buffing compound.
i forgot to mention that i bought three different grit belts for the belt sander,i got 60 coarse-80 medium-120 fine.

Hey nice settup there sticks! that is going to make your work a lot easier. The best part is you paid for it with the other kinives you made. Very cool. Can't wait to see your next knife made witht the new gear.
thanks,
rat
WOW, you lucky bugger, that is awesome. The buffer will be a bonus and the belt sander will do all the beveling, I am posting you my knives to finish properly!!!
Im thinking that when im up and running properly and have sold a few knives im going to make a knife for the members here as a pass around.
each member gets to keep and test it for two weeks then passes it on to another member, that way i can get some feed back and make something with the input of the members here.
Today i started clearing my outbuilding so i can turn it into a workshop, what a job this wasmy dustbin is full and its going to take at least another day to clear, funny how everything gets dumped in there, ive told my family that im keeping the keys and no one is allowed in there from now on:thumb:
I also found some tongs i didn't know i had they are the ones on the right of the picture.,some dust masks and a pair of new safty googles:
I did a bit of modifiying to my belt sander as it had an edge that would get in the way of sanding blades so i ground and smoothed this off,you can see on the left hand side of the belt, its the silver part.
thanks Bud,thats my Nessmuk trinity,it took some time to put together.
The case moose was from a trade with Action Jackson, the Marbles Axes was a gift from my good lady wife for giving up smoking and i made the Nessmuk fixed blade myself.:thumb:
I should be making a few more full sized Nessies when i get my workshop finished
looks like you'll have some fun. i'd love to try it out, but don't think it'd turn out too well living in an apartment and all.
you should do some step by steps on here. if you dont mind.
If you check out the stickys at the top of the main page here you'll find a step by step on making a file knife, ive also done a step by step when i made my nessmuk on how to put a handle on a knife.:thumb:
I've been thinking about making my own backyard forge too. I blacksmith with the California Blacksmith's Association and the forges and tools we use are mostly 1800's style, but I like the modern tools that sticks65 uses.
(but I would definitely go with the full size anvil)
Ill be PM-ing you to pick your brains on blacksmithing:
Yer i agree full size anvil is the way to go,I have to be patient though because they are not easy to come bye here but ill get one soon enough.:thumb:
Ok Bru, all that gear looks realy good and the anvil looks far to new and clean!!!
We are all now expecting some serious knife porn, hard core to be comming out of that forge!!
Are you going to put the anvil onto a tree stump to get the right height for working?
About wednesday this coming week ill be picking up the wood to make the first bench for my workshop as i have sold the last flint striker knife and this money will pay for the wood :thumb:
Then i can get my belt sander and vise set up which i am very much looking forward to.
The belt sander is great and i would advise anyone who is making knives to get one, look at the job it did on my latest blade.:
well i cannot make my bench untill next week now because i need to make a money transfer which will take a few daysso ill pick up the timber on monday and make a start next week, there is always something to hold you back but ill keep pushing forward regardless:thumb:
so today i fixed my anvil to the tree trunk and all i need to do is fix a metal plate to the bottom of the trunk so i can fix it to the wooden block in the pic to raise it up to the desired hight.:thumb:
heres my progress report on how the workshop is coming on.
today i got most of the bench finished all i have to do now is cover the top with hard board and fix down the vise and bench grinder,as you can see i got a lot of my kit stored under the bench which has made more room.
I also attached my whetstone and buffer to a portable bench that i can pull out when needed.
so heres some pictures.
Ive also added a picture of the wood scales, leather sheath,o1 tool steel for the blade, brass pins and an empty 5.56 shell case which will be used for the lanyard hole, this is going to be an English bushcraft knife,to put this all together has cost me £30 including the glue, this does not include the new sanding wheel attachment for my drill.
Here we are Bru.
Looks like you are getting things sorted out now.
The photos I have seen of forges all look like brilliant places to hang out, cosy and warm with a fire burning the smithys at work even put potatoes in foil on their fire for lunch!!
When you are up and running it will be good to see how it compares with working elfresco, will be a lot better inside thats for sure.
Ill be doing most of the work indoors but when i raise enough coin to get a propane forge it will be cushty:thumb:,until then ill still have to fire up the old forge.
I had become interested in making knives myself, (along with longbows/recurve bows) and am setting up my shop soon.
I will certainly be looking to your thread here for tips and ideas, however to begin I plan on taking a bit of a different approach.
I'm gonna link to you a site that I really love, which shows another way to make some knives using ordered billets.
I love the knives this guy can make and his no nonsense approach to things concerning knives and survival tips actually.
I got most of the equipment I need already, and the Grizzly Knife Grinder he talks about and shows a video of (check it out if you visit the page) is next on my list of things to order.
a few knives will have to be sold before i can get the propane forge that i want.:thumb:
