SO I bought some cheap'o red dot for my saiga and was wondering what yardage to sight it in...I am thinking shorter distance since MOST fire fights take place in a Urban setting...say, 50ish?
What do you tactical guru's set yours up at?
Sight in at 50yds and that should keep you on target out to 300.
I have a SOCOMII with an Aimpoint and 2 AR's in 223 and 1 in 6.5 Grendel with an Aimpoint and they are all sighted in the same way!
I did 50 yds. on my Chinese SKS using a Tasco 5 MOA 42mm. A 1 MOA dot will cover 1.0472 inches at a distance of 100 yards so thats about 5 1/4" or about 2 3/4" at 50 yds.
Another trick is to sight the strike of your bullet, at close range, so that it hits at the very top of the red dot. You then use gravity to your advantage. Your plan is sort of like this:
Close range the bullet strikes at the top of or just above the top of the red dot.
At 100 yards, the bullet strikes just below the top of the red dot.
At about 200 yards the bullet will strike pretty close to the center of the red dot.
At about 300 yards the bullet will strike at the bottom of or just below the red dot.
This is a sort of "cheat method" to using a red dot. Of course, things depend upon the size of the red dot you're using and so on. This method's results are not set in stone so if you go to play or use this method, allow for some deviation. If you practice with the cheat system, you can get used to using it for general shooting needs and speed shooting to some degree.
