Thought this would go good with the edible animals thread. I would like to hear what people have eaten, how prepared, and what they thought of it. I am by far an expert or even know much at all.
I have eaten cattail shoots alot in the spring. They can be eaten raw but its best to boil them to kill parasites. It also makes em more tender. I usually leave a little green on them and boiling helps them to tender a bit. I have steamed em in foil with butter to and that is some kinda good!
I like dock plants...it's better than spinach any day. I simmer them in two changes of water if they are bitter. I also may simmer them until almost tender and then stir fry them with meat and flavorings.
Acorn flour is wonderful stuff...everyone seems to love cookies or breads made from acorn flour. It takes preparation (shelling the acorns, soaking through several changes of water until the water runs clear, drying and grinding them.) but it is well worth it in my mind.
I've made almost all of the cattail recipes, and they are good, but I like the yellow pollen added to flour best. The roots make excellent white flour but is very time consuming.
There is an edible wild plant section. Of all the edible wild foods I think my favorite non-fruit wild food is smilax tips. Lightly boiled then seasoned olive oil and soy sauce they are excellent. For a fruit I nominate mulberries... easy to collect, delicious, very useful. Hopniss is a good root, found nearly everywhere, had to misidentify, requires very little energy to dig it up. Easy to cook, good flavor.
