I have tried many different types, patterns, styles, and colors over the years for bass. There are 2 that are my fall-backs, or, I guess the term among the computer generation, my default choices. One is a 5/8 oz black Jitterbug, and the other is a #7 flatfish, black with large yellow spots. Which ever you use, toss it, let it sit, twitch it, let it sit, retrieve a foot or so, repeat from step 2. Killers at dawn and dusk.

Seen a few others like the original black and silver rapala like me. Cast it out and let it sit till the ripples are gone then twitch it on the surface a few times. Probably catch 90% of the fish on it when it's still on the surface.
I hate when I have to switch to worms cause they're not hitting the surface. |

Lots of the ones above defiantly have a place in my lure box. Especially the zara spook and the rebel minnow (one of my all time favourites). I used to work with this guy who made great floating lures out of turkey quills, painted to look like small struggling minnows. You could get them to struggle in the surface film like an injured fish just by reeling in slowly and gently swiping the rod tip side to side. Sadly, I only have a few left and Im scared to use them in case I lose the last few, they are superb on the small bass streams of the South.
