Picked up a new backpack this week, I am looking for any info on it as it is hard to find out much. It is a KELTY GILA 6500 and man is it big. It has the mystery ranch suspension system. The black plate in the front helps with large loads, I am a big guy so it prevents the waist strap from digging in. It has a big internal metal frame not just metal stays. Let me know if you have this pack or know much about it. Thanks
we bought my girlfriend a kelty pack a while ago and its been really good, good construction and great materials. They usually have some good products from what ive seen.
I do know that Kelty worked with Dana Gleason (founder of Mystery Ranch) somewhat but that was a while ago before the Mystery Ranch brand came about. At least 10 years ago. So it very well may be a Mystery Ranch frame design. He also worked with CamelBak on some of their designs. I can not see the frame since it is internal. But I do know that the suspension system is no longer the same as Mystery Ranch as they use a different yoke system now (the part that allows you to change the toso length). They also no longer use metal frames. The pack design itself is similar to Mystery Ranch/ Dana design large packs.
Overall Kelty makes a good pack. Add in some design features of Dana Gleason and you are sure to have a good winning pack.
I have tried each of those. The Erblestock is certainly high-quality and durable. The Arc'teryx fits nice but I have only tried the recreational packs. But I certainly prefer Mystery Ranch suspension and frame. Most comfortable when carrying 30+ lbs. Erblestock uses a slightly tougher 1000D material though the downside is that it is less water resistant than the 500D Mystery Ranch uses.
thanks guys, one thing this is a heavy pack I think it is about 10 pounds dry. I will load it up and see if I can crush my spine or not. I do not know my realistic hauling weight yet I will see I guess.
