So I've done a grand swing in theory while thinking about survival. It started with selecting a Marlin 336 in 30-30 with a nice 4x or 6x scope on it. This rifle could take game effectively and put someone down if need be (remember we're talking theory here).
Then I spent a lot of time looking at my Marlin 1894 in .357. Much handier, much lighter. Due to my location, the constraints of range wouldn't effect me. The 1894 seemed like a better option than the 336.
Then I began pondering the .22 lr, notably the Ruger 10/22. I began imagining the perfect survival set-up for a 10/22. After a lot of research, I stumbled again across the combination survival rifles chambered in various .22s and shotgun cartridges.
This got me wondering.
So the .22 hornet is superior to the .22 lr in nearly every way save for noise and cost per round. So in a strictly survival sense (especially when you're out of Dodge), when you have what you carry and not stock piling, wouldn't a survival rifle in a .22 hornet/.410 setup be advantageous? .22 lr wins in the fact that you can stock pile like mad, but i can't take my stock pile with me. .22 Hornet seems like the absolute minimum effective cartridge I could take with me to take small and medium game with minimal space.
So in a strictly survival point of view, you won't need battle rifle in large calibers, you won't be engaging armed opponents, you won't be hauling mass amounts of ammunition.
This is all just theory, remember. So I'm looking for realistic, constructive, criticism. .22 hornet rifle or .22 hornet/.410 combo?
