What would be a good round for animals up to coyote size? I have a New England Firearms Handi Rifle w/scope. The only thing I have been able to find locally is Remington 45 gr soft points, but I see there's a wide variety available on line (I usually shop at MidwayUSA). The range would be short, maybe 20-50 yards because the area around the homestead is heavily wooded.
I keep chickens and there's always "something" nosing around out back looking for an easy meal. '*****, possums, etc. Can't shoot foxes though, they are protected.
I've always loved the .22 Hornet, especially in the K Hornet configuration. I wish it had gained more popularity. Being so small and light, it would be ideal for lightweight, compact backpacking and survival guns.
I have never owned one, but the older I get and the more of a fan I become of effcient cartidges and chamberings the more I want one. Something like that is definitely on my "To Get" list. Just havent stumbbled across and good used ones and new ones are a bit on the pricey side of what I am willing to pay these days. Guess the tightwad in me is coming out!
My sister shot the exact same gun that she bought new in the 1950s that one of my daughters inherited...Great little gun and a fantastic cartridge.
We use it for coyotes, lynx, bobcat, badger and fox as well as for prairie dogs to 300 yds or so with either 52 gr or 55 gr Berger varmint bullets.
