What are your thoughts on this? I know overpenetration would be a huge issue in an urban neighborhood. Is there any ammo I could use to reduce the risk of collateral damage, hollowpoints maybe? I do not intend this to be my home defense weapon, I have revolvers for that. I do see myself taking it with me on remote wilderness trips. How does it compare to 44mag or 357mag as far as overpenetration goes? I like the politically correct look of an old winchester. It could come in handy in court.
I wouldn't worry about over penetration. If would be very rare that the issue will arise. If it does and you are alive, you can worry then. take care of yourself and family. If you are comfortable with a 30-30, then use it. Learn to shoot it well. It is a good choice as ammo is available and sometimes can be found on sale during deer season. Shoot a couple of watermelons with it. It will give you more confidence on its ability to scare Zombies.
Forget about worrying about over penetration when it comes to killing you gotta worry about only 1 thing and thats putting holes in the bad guy a 30-30 hollow point will lose alot of energy going through a person and honestly it doesn't matter if your using buckshot or bird shot it will punch through the thin sheetrock in most homes
so seeing that there going to be holes regardless what you use use what you want I like the 30-30 I like my garand and i like my shotguns my pistols/revolvers and ar
and im going to use whatever i get my hands on first
a 30 30 is a good rifle relativly free from jamming issues quick to reload and accurate
My HD rifle is a 32 Win Spcl and my two brothers use 30-30's. I use 170 gr cast Lead FP and they use 150 gr cast lead FP for both deer hunting and house protection. Point of a 30-30 is it is user friendly, light, easy to carry, quick to mount and easy to hit with than most handguns. Going through a wall is a problem with any gun but more important is will it pout down quickly what or who you are shooting at. From Feral dog or black bear to meth head you want some power, penetration and expansion,. Hence my lead FP bullets.
My handgun is a .357 Dan Wesson and the same rule applies. 158 gr LSWC bullets for penetration and expansion inside.
If all you have is a 30-30 you are well armed for just about any contingency from 10 feet to 150 yards. Buy it and as much ammo as you can afford and shoot the living daylights out of it till it becomes automatic like pointing a finger. The tool that is an extension of your hand.
I spent my formative years years within the confines of New York City. The Sullivan Law was in full effect, so that made it difficult to buy pistols. It also made it difficult to purchase ammunition for pistols, so the pistol caliber carbines weren't a player. The Winchester trappers and Marlin Marauders in 30-30 were a popular alternative to a shotgun for home defense, and ammunition wasn't a problem.
You have to know that due to television, most people believe that bullets stay in the body, right? I mean, that's why the forensic techs are always able to solve the crime by matching the bullet to the gun. Starting sometime after the Kennedy assassination, up until a few years ago, any rifle purchased in NYC had to be ballistic fingerprinted, and a fired bullet kept on file. They did that for 40+ years, at a cost of millions of dollars for salaries and storage costs. The total number of crimes solved due to this massive boondoggle= 0.
