I found this posted on another site and found the link interesting. I was wondering if this was at all possible this summer - to take advantage of an already established tree (root system especially) and graft onto it fruit or nut tree branches.

I was wondering if I could take an old sycamore and graft onto it an apple, peach, pear and plum branch, all just above head height. If this is possible I would think that taking advantage of the new fast growing hybrids like tulip poplars would be most efficient. Let the tree grow for a couple years and then make the grafts then once the grafts are established, top the tree and allow the tree to feed the fruit limbs. Would this work?
I think it would be truly amazing to have a multi-fruit tree which could yeild a variety of fruits!
If this is possible, why has it not yet been done?
Also, I'm assuming if this is possible an apple tree could be made to have a variety of types of apples growing from it - yes/no?
