Honestly, pepper spray, a knife with a3-4 "blade that locks and a flashlight should be standard EDC for everyone over 18. as far as after gun confiscations, crossbows and compound bows are still available. Spear is good, Machettes are multipurpose tools, axes, hammers, throwing weapons can be made out of materials from the hardware store with a grinding wheel.

Steel brake line (3ft long), sewing needle, cut the ends off show strings where they are taped (fray it a little). Make a dart with the shoe string-end, insert dart in brake line. Now you have a blowgun. You could even soak the darts with your favorite poison.
Good range, good accuracy, good luck! |

Well, I guess I'm lucky to be in Arizona.
![]() Gun + knife, no problems with LEOs, even concealed. Even kids can carry a pocket knife less than 4" here. They're considered tools. If not carrying, I think my wad-o-keys on my lanyard (pink with printed skulls on it, of course!) would do some serious damage when swinging it. I do purposefully carry them like that through parking lots. This thread made me think about a telescoping magnetic pick-up tools that I have. When extended, it would make someone think 2x after getting whacked with it a few times (similar to a car antenna). The Neodymium magnet end would give a little extra umpf and pain factor, especially if you can get the face/head. It has a clip on like a pen, so it's great in a pocket. It extends to about 2' and is about 5" when closed up. It's also great for fishing canning jar lids/rings out of boiling water so I keep one in the kitchen drawer. I bought a few of them in a discount store years ago for a couple of bucks, so I think I'll throw one in my purse. ![]() |

Aerosol wasp spray. Meaner than pepper spray, shoots farther, does more damage. Sometimes permanent.

Couple pieces of pipe???? Look up pipe shotgun. Keep parts separate. Then all you need is the 12 gauge shells.

Good luck with that in many cases. As for dart guns...blow guns and all that bollocks...I think we can agree that while we are living in the real world, many posters on these Boards are not. I'm surprised no one's mentioned Ninja throwing stars ...or have they??? |

They probably did mention ninja throwing stars.
Here is what I find puzzling. By all respects the maximum, most effective civilian owned weapon is a firearm. Untill civilians are allowed to drive around in humvee's with rocket launchers mounted, the highest form of self defense is a firearm. Now, not everywhere, but most places in the US a firearm is legal. Some states are of course more strict on what you can have/carry but all that aside, most do allow you to carry a firearm if you pass certain requirements. Why is it okay to carry such a deadly device hidden, but yet walking down the street with a POS ninja sword strapped to my back more illegal? The sword is no where near as dangerous, if some moron wants to walk around with throwing stars as his self defense, why is that illegal or wrong. I rather have an idiot try to nail me with a throwing star than pull out even a 22LR and hit me with that. Its...confusing. Granted, these weapons are insanely idiotic but if morons want to carry that instead of something effective like a pistol, why question it? |

I also agree the law in the USA is weird in regards to guns legal...other less lethal items not. Like say an ASP baton. Here in Oz most civilians cannot get a pistol permit and just about everything except a walking stick could be classed as an illegal weapon. (The walking stick you can carry in full view of the public etc.) So I think there is some merit in making mention of non-illegal stuff you could carry in your car, that you might be able to use to defend yourself. But too many posters here are suggesting just plain silly stuff...and as I said before, you carry a crowbar or a claw hammer around on the passenger seat, you better be a construction worker on your way home from a job. Carrying a crowbar or a hammer around for self-defence alone, could actually be against the law, depending what State or country you live in. The law is a strange animal in regards to weapons and self-defence, most LEO's would agree on that. If you and I stopped on the way home from our construction job, to aid a little old lady being mugged by four thugs, one or more of whom had a knife....and in order to protect her and ourselves we pulled our hammers and chisels from our tool belts...that would be perfectly understandable in a court of law, provided we didn't beat the thugs to death when they were laying on the ground. That's a case of using equipment we're quite within our rights to carry due to our job. And we were on our way home from work. If we were still carrying that equipment when we went to dinner after going home and taking a shower and putting on clean clothes...the first question a cop will ask is why were you wearing your work tool belt to dinner, hours after you'd finished work and gone home and got changed. Now that equipment could be considered an illegal weapon. Strange but true. DISCLAIMER: The above is an example scenario...it's not meant to be taken as a literal legal example by anyone reading said example. It's not legal advice to follow, it's a situational scenario as an example only. Check you State and country laws to see what you can and cannot carry on your person or in your vehicle as an aid to self-defence. Do not take my word or opinion for any of the above. |

While I do not disagree here, in this day and age, having pipes (though not assembled to resemble anything) might be construed as terrorist. Just tossing an observation out there. Having said that, I keep a pipe in my vehicle. Being a single female, I like the added 'security' it gives me with other things I carry as well. |

I never go anywhere without my conceal carry, but if there where a nationwide gun confiscation this is my backup. It a good long distance weapon that allows you to keep your attacker(s) at a distance, and with low disabling blows it's hard weapon to be taken from you and used against you. Even someone who has physical disabilities as myself can be very deadly with it with little training, I'm lucky that I had studied martial arts for about 10 years so using it is a natural weapon for me. No one is ever going to question you using a cane, I would recommend walking with one even if you don't need one just as a walking stick.

When I use to deliver pizza I would keep a 3 foot long lead pipe in my passenger seat. I got pulled over by a cop and he asked why I had it. I simply responded with cause the cops wont get there faster than this pipe will, he laughed and said just be careful.

I worked graveyard shift in San Francisco for ten years entering buildings to repair alarms or investigate false alamrs much of the time the PD would look at the exterior and give it the all clear and leave. I would arrive and enter the premise unless there was a sure sign of a breakin the PD would not return. I used to carry a five cell metal flashlight called a B light prior to maglite being sold everywhere. I being a self respecting hippy kid didnt believe in guns non violent dont ya know. I took guns away from several burglars absolutly beat the snot out of many who made the mistake of attacking me rather than leaving me alone and unfotunatly killed two german shepard guard dogs who attacked me in areas of schools under construction on different occasions where they shouldnt have been i had no recourse it was me or them. So never underestimate the power of a motivated person with a fairly heavy metal club in thier hand. I was myself involved in 48 aprehensions during that ten years on graveyard shift and never lost a fight so im still here to talk about it. I over the years lost some of my hippy tendancies and now carry a spyerco folder and a Ruger snub nose 357 for personnel protection plus im a lot older and slower these days. but in a pinch a motivated person can do quite a bit to defend themselves with very little.
