Part of the problem is the bloated state bureaucracy has raided city and county budgets to make up for their own shortfalls. I've always felt local govt is usually the best, and most responsive form of govt representation; CA is as big as some countries, and the state bureaucracy is out of control.

Three of the counties, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, and Merced, are all adjacent and form a major ag area of California's Central Valley.

Two other big problems in this area:

1. These counties became bedroom communities for the San Franciso Bay Area. Many of the liberal counties in the Bay Area imposed housing limits, which drove the price of real estate thru the roof. Hundreds of thousands of people moved to the valley and commuted, which drove the price of homes in this area up. Then it all came crashing down.

2. Not trying to offend anyone here, but these are the facts: there is a large Hispanic population in the valley, many newly arrived or first and second generation from Mexico and central/south America to work in the fields. While many of these people contribute, their influx has also led to major gang problems and a permanent underclass that is dependent on the state and fed govt for food and housing. Frankly, the local communites have not been able to keep up with the violence.

Taxes are going up, roads are becoming impassable, police and fire are being cut, schools are failing and becoming overcrowded, and the level of violence continues to climb, especially in these prior quiet, rural, farm communites.

Which is why people like me are leaving the state every day...

Least Stressed
1. Ford County, Kan., 4.07 -- Main town is Dodge City, which is a regional center, has new state casino and a Junior College, agricultural area

2. Ellis County, Kan., 4.17 --Main town is Hays, regional center, home to Fort Hays State University and their massive international student and internet virtual college programs, ag area and lots of gas/oil

5. Finney County, Kan., 4.89 --Main town is Garden City, regional center, Tyson Beef plant, Junior College, ag area and gas/oil

6. Riley County, Kan., 5.08 --Main town is Manhattan, Home to Kansas State University, Fort Riley is nearby

The first three are in Western Kansas. The further east in Kansas you go the more stressed it gets.

It all depends on what you count as stressed or not. I happen to know Finney County (grew up there) and . . .the level of pollution from the factory farming of animals, water pollution, run-off, amount of cancer per capita . . .says that not all is as it appears in this article. Yes at the moment they may be affluent. They also may be ruining their land and endangering their long term health and water resources.

I live right now in one of the "stressed" areas but I'd far rather stay here. The water is cleaner and people are far more aware of dirtying their own water and agriculture. We will survive the short term stress but out live those who are trading short term gain for long term pain.

Take a look at the threads today -- young people on the rise with stomach cancer. Round-up Ready no longer effective. Just a small part of the larger picture.

I noticed that the majority of most stressed counties are in blue states or those "ruled" by Democrats, and the least stressed mostly in red states. Why am I not surprised?
It’s a ploy that has been used for thousands of years, government crippling the private sector, taking from the rich and distributing to the poor in the name of power grabs and state control. The source of the problem for our US state counties is that very view in state government dont understand the use of interpositioning and nullification to enforce state sovereignty according to our constitution.

States need to discover constitutional law and enforce it in their states and tell the federal government and government agencies to get out of their state. This would rescue all counties in every state a great deal or for all states that took back their sovereignty anyway.

I noticed they only used counties with a population of 25,000 or more. That pretty much rules out all but about 10 counties in Iowa. We've got 99 of them, and they'd probably all be on the list but our counties are so geographically small, and they're filled with farms, we don't get much population :D
