that are connected by a wire, where you sorta squeeze the wire sides together and they create sparks... anyone know what they're called...? My brain is being a douche tonight.
I decided to take a trip to Lowes in order to find cheap substitutes for survival kit contents. I picked up a torch striker found that it'll work in a pinch for starting a fire. I tested it using both char cloth and cotton as tinder and it did a fine job. The tips seem to be the same material as the typical 'flint striker' fire starters.
I think the biggest problem that you face in starting a fire is that the sparks will fall into the striker pan so you either have to stuff the pan with your tinder or turn it over so that the sparks fall down, but then the pan is somewhat blocking your view.
At around $3, It probably isn't the best to use when you can find ferrocerium striker rods (the rod alone, no handle, no striker, no frills) for a couple bucks and obviously, you can go to Wally-World and pick up a pack of 8 lighters for just over a dollar.
You are referring to a flint striker, but if you are looking for something to start fires with in the woods, you might try fire steels instead. I had posted where I thought was the cheapest place to find them, but had other members give me links for better spots. I just ordered some from Hong Kong (free shipping) http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=126838
The strikers are a bit big for a BOB and only have a small piece of flint in them. Check out the fire steels and I am quite certain that you will not be disappointed!
I was at my brother's house this weekend, and he showed me a magnesium fire starter, where you just press it down on whatever you want to burn, and it starts right up. I think I want a few mag fire starters. thanks anyway fellas. lol
It's all about (for me anyways) having as many options under my belt as possible.. I've tried those torch strikers and they work but you have to get the hang of it, along with keeping the roller clean, and figuring out how much tinder to put in the bowl.. Too much and it wont light and will get caught up in the works, too little and it won't catch the spark..
Not saying its the best of gear but if it's all you have, roll with it...
Thanks for fixing the link, good price on those, especially with the free shipping.
