So, my next purchase will be for placement in that nice convenient but small compartment in my truck- the lipped shelf that sits just under and to the right of the steering wheel. Ruled out the Kel-Tech and Ruger. Easy access, reliablility, and withstanding extreme car temperatures are criteria for this purchase. About $500 to spend, give or take. Thoughts? Already own a Glock 26 for everyday CCW. Thoughts?
A larger capacity handgun is better in most cases for a car gun but then a smaller one is harder to find for thieves and searchers so it depends on what exactly you want it for. Either one will cost more than $500 though, especially with night sights. Since you already like Glocks, might look at a Glock 19.
I believe the M&P comes in an ultracompact which might fit my needs. Firearms are not permitted on the premises of my workplace, but keeping one in the truck is OK. A thief could find it easily, but thats the case with any break-in.
Why, So he can have 7 less rounds of equally effective (against humans) ammunition?
9mm(.356) vs .40 vs .45 debate is pointless. All are equally effective, It takes multiple center mass hits, preferably just above heart hitting Superior Vena Cava, Aorta, pulmonary artery. Baring head-shots you go unconscious from blood loss then bleed out from all ccw caliber pistol shots. Then might survive if able to get adequate emergency surgery quickly with Blood transfusion.
Though I love my CM9 for concealed carry (awesome to be able to carry a 9mm in my back pocket), I'd go with a gun with more capacity for a vehicle gun.
Avoid the Kahr. They have horrible customer service. I had a problem with one of their products and they never resolved the problem. I am out over $100.
I disagree I've had a Kahr PM9 for over 5 years with no problems during the past 2,200 rounds. It's my 2nd favorite pistol. If I were in the OP situation, I would never leave a loaded gun in my vehicle when I'm not in it. Whatever gun you're carrying, that's what goes on the shelf if you must. Then back in your holster when you leave the vehicle. If you're not good at holstering and un holstering, then practice a lot with an unloaded gun. The proper holster, like a hybrid with a kydex shell or a very well made leather holster that stays open when the gun is out of it, is easier than you think to holster, as long as you take your time and practice and use good trigger finger discipline.
For what it's worth, here's a video I did on my preferred method of vehicle carry, but I do not leave it like this in my car when I leave my car.
In addition, the OP asked if it's worth getting tritium sights? Yes and no. Tritium front yes, but I've removed all tritium rear sights and use standard black rear sights now. The only sight that needs to be tritium is the front. I use Warren Tactical plain black rear and the Warren tritium front. An excellent combo.
