I was curious if new manufactured 870 Wingmasters are still held in high regard or if their manufacturing quality has declined? Any switch to cheaper parts to reduce costs within the past five years that anyone know of?
Dont know about recent manufacture as I already have several and dont need another one. If I do I will be headed to the local Pawn Shop where I have bought all mine for about 60 % less than a new one all were gently used.
870 wingmasters have a taller vented rib too. Eaier to get your eye right on the rail quickly.
however, If you're not going to use a shotgun a ton, the regular 870 express is just fine. If you plan on shooting 100 rounds a week, the wingmaster is a better choice.
IMHO i dont think the newer wingmasters have the same feel that the older ones have. plus the gripcap is ugly as hell. if you're interested in getting a birdgun/busting clays, and want a wingmaster, find an older one with the goose or duck on the gripcap. they have a natural point of aim and naturally glide to your shoulder. the new ones i have handled dont.
One thing that is different IMO is the wood and finish. My parents gave me an 870 round about 1976. The wood would not have been any more beautiful if the CEO of the company personally selected the blank from which the stock was carved. The finish was so glossy that it looked wet.
Picked up an old Wingmaster and tacticooled it. Great action; smooth and reliable. Only thing to watch for (if it's important to you) is that the older ones might only have a 2 3/4" chamber. Works for me, though, and seeing that some of the cops are using 2 3/4 reduced recoil buck makes me happy.
