Alternative fuels for Woodburners

Many new people out there might want to save the corncobs as an alternative fuel for their woodburners.

We used them when wood had got wet due to weather or such.

Do NOT use as the primary fuel source for a long time as they seem to burn hotter and faster then most timber. Grandpa would soak one in fuel oil and one in gas for a few hours then burn them at the start of spring to clean out the flue. Don't try this if you've not cleaned any flues or chimney piping before. It can get hairy really fast.

When I was a kid my grandparents had an old hand crank corn sheller that we used to shell corn for the chickens. We saved the cobs and would soak them in kerosene for starting fires in the wood stove.

Dried pine cones work well also. Don't try to use either of these methods for a heat source (only for starting the fire).
