so when i was in boyscouts, we used to go on survival camps all the time in ohio. well now i am in east texas and all grown up, but have several teens in the youth dept at church that are wanting to do the same. havnt really been camping down here much except at the state parks, but cant really do what we want there so any ideas? looking to find a place where we can hike throught the woods and just set up camp wherever, pref near a body of water for fish and water supply. show them how to trap and process small game, and make emrgency shelters, and basically fend for themselves... anyone know of anyplaces that would fit the bill? i am in tyler tx and wouldnt have a prob driving a couple hours for the right location. thnx
I'm not familiar with your area, but the local Boy Scout chapter or the Forest Service will point you in the right direction. Either service will take your needs into account and can probably suggest something perfect for you.
National Forests southeast of Tyler around Lufkin and Nacogdoches and on down toward Beaumont. All within 2-3.5 hours. No experience camping there but believe it is much less restrictive than state parks.
I'm from Tyler. Only places is national forests.
Or have permission from land owner. For fishing : Bellwood lake is off 155, usually only catch catfish, its also patroled by cops regularly because of crackheads dumping cars. So have car kept locked and fishing permit ready, also you can practice some other skills here . Other places to fish, neches river, sabine river. Lake Tyler and Palestine isn't the best without a boat.
I'm from Beaumont, just got back from Tyler state park. You might try the Big Thicket natl presearve. There is an info office off Highway 69 just north of Kountze. There is a Turkey creek trail thats about 25 or 30 miles long. I believe they allow primitive camping off of the trail, check with office, probably no hunting or trapping.
