This would be illegal.

It is illegal to ship a firearm to another individual. To ship it, you must got through a FFL.

If you were to meet someone and conduct a FTF or face to face transaction, that is legal...

Hi Chris. Selling/transporting firearms across state lines is a federal crime. (help me out here, posters) Where I live, if you're of legal age to own a firearm AND you're not prohibited from owning a firearm because of a criminal history, you can purchase a firearm from another individual within the same state.. if it's a legally owned firearm.. lol Advice.. talk to local gunshops, your county sheriff, to be sure what is legal and what is not. Do not take chances, ok? It's not about being nice and respectable (I'm sure you are, so am I.), it IS about following the laws to a "T". Enjoy the sport of owning and shooting! Just do your home work first. Local law enforcement would be a great place to start to enquire about ownership.

Christopher, there is a way to do it legally. You can get pre-1899 firearms shipped right to your door.

Not the latest and greatest but you may be surprised what treasures you can get this way.

Christopher, not sure what the laws are in your state, but here in TX you can go to a gun show and not worry about the paper trail, I mean paper work. There are guys walking with rifles or whatever in there hands and some even have signs that say "Ask me about my _ _ _ _ _ " (fill in the blank).

That is the "gun-show loophole" that many anti-gunners talk about. That is tax money that Big Brother isn't stealing from you so that may change also.

Same goes for Virginia. Face to Face sales between private citizens are still (for now) legal and no need for the batf paperwork. Gun shows are the same as well for private sales between citizens. Picked up a Mossberg, Rossi & Garand this way.

What about gun parts? Are there specific parts that you can't ship without a FFL?

You can ship everything and anything other than a receiver without a FFL transfer. Some receivers that are less than a certain percentage complete, as determined by BATFE, can also be shipped without the need of a FFL transfer.

DO NOT walk up to a cop on the street and start asking about how to do a private gun purchase! He will assume you are a felon seeking firearms. Just might put the handcuffs on you "for your safety" while he runs your i.d. Some gun stores might lie to you also so they can sell you one instead. You must personally research your local laws.

My advice is: Call a attorney, ask if they give free initial counsiltations, and trust only what an good attorney tells you. If you ask 3 LEOs, you'll likely get 3 different answers, at least one of them will be unpleasent.
Thank God we still have gun shows.
