Default Bought an SKS today.

Advertise Here

I bought an SKS today. Dont know tons about them but it was beautiful so I decided to buy it. Came with the original magazine, a 5 round magazine, and two 10 rounds magazines.

I was reading an apparently to get them to take larger magazines you have to do some modifications?

Any SKS Guru's around here willing to give some advice on that?

Also what should I look for to identify the maker, era of the SKS? Thanks

Look up bolt mod on sksboards. Easy to do. Can still use original mag too.

It already accepts detachable magazines so I guess there is no work to do.

Congrats !! Make sure to get ammo and be careful when doing mods on the SKS so that it remains 922R compliant.

If it's a D or an M model, stick whatever size honker you want in it then.

They ARE rather primitive, ugly fascinating firearms. I really wish I had picked up a couple back when they were cheap, I think they are highly cool.

I just picked up my first sks two weeks ago. I was told it was a Norinco, which is a Chinese sks. There are some Chinese letters on the side. I don't know much about them either. I did tear mine down, and you can find larger mags if you're lucky. Mine can be swapped out by pulling the trigger assembly out, and then the mag. I just ordered a Tapco Intrafuse stock, and two 20 round tapco mags. I believe these mags can be swapped out without dropping the trigger group. Unfortunately it is very hard to come by this type of stuff with everyone freaking out right now. You tube is a good source to learn more about the sks. Good luck, and have fun. I was able to shoot mine this past Saturday, and it was a ton of fun.

The SKS is one of the truly underappreciated firearms of the world. AK's and AR's get alot of love, but very few weapons work as well, and as economically as an SKS does. I've owned alot of guns, but one of my all time favorites has to be my $79 Norinco SKS that I purchased in the early 90's. What a fantastic little gun it has been. It has been my companion through more backpacking and bushwaking adventures than I could count.

I would have a very hard time deciding between my SKS and my AK if I had to only grab one gun post SHTF (none of my AR's would make the cut).

The sks is what made me sell my mini 14's. Awesome gun and cheap ammo. Ive had several pass through my hands but I'm now down to a paratrooper and a yugo. They are freaking rock solid. You will hear quite a bit about the 922r laws. That may or may not matter because we could all be possible outlaws in the coming weeks. Enjoy.

I went to Yoopers site and was unable to find anything that matches the markings on my rifle. I found a diamond with an 8 on it. The barrels says sks 7.62x39 russia, and underneath that CAI ST ALB VT

Why go to another site when right here at survivalist boards is the answer to the
OP's SKS questions.
I do have one question for the OP, do the mags now you have, have duckbills on them?
In the picture below I am pointing to the duckbill on the removeable mag.
Or does your SKS have a Mag like an AK47 uses? (An indicator of a D or M model SKS).
If its a D or M model no mods are needed.

This type of mag only fits the common SKS's and will not fit anything else.

I purchased one shortly after the CT shooting for $240 (type 56 with a screw in barrel and milled trigger group)...there were as many as a dozen to select from, no body wanted them...so I gave one a home where it would be appreciated

$300 to $400 seems to be a general asking price...but some are trying to ask more...

I can't find any for a reasonable price. I am very happy w/ mt local gun shop owner who said when asked about gouging, "I didn't raise my prices after KAtrina, and I;m not going to do it in a few months after things calm down. I'll get what you need and there are going to have a lot of people w/ expensive rifle they can't get rid of..."
