I just got my first rifle recently (Saiga AK-47) and i love it. Now i'm looking for something a little bit more powerful. I'm thinking the .308 looks like what i'm wanting in terms of power as well as availability of ammo, and I like the idea of having a high cap magazine. I'm leaning towards the m1a socom, but it's so damn expensive. Are there any .308 rifles that are similar in quality and have at least 20 round magazines available, but might be a couple hundred bucks less?

Saiga .308 since you're already into the AK-series.
Or go with a good accurate bolt gun for distance work. |

Look at Ruger. You might be interested in the Gunsight Scout.

Cheap gun, cheap ammo (Steel cased.), cheap mags. I have M1A's but I will have 2 of those as well soon. |

I have had the basic three for a while.
I have come to believe that going forward a heavy bolt action in 308, 300 or 338WM will be the most important. My situation may differ from yours. |

thanks for all the replies guys. i'm gonna check out each of your recommendations. i'm looking for more of a battle rifle i guess...one that's semi (i hate reloading lol). i'm just starting out my gun collection so i'm trying to get something to cover every situation. i carry an m&p 40 for close up situations, the AK is good at midrange, now i'd like to be able to snipe some zombies haha (i'm kidding...the zombie crap is way outta hand). i'm still thinking m1a since everything i've liked so far is around $1800

Well one option but it would require a bit of work. Find a local high power shooting club like a state club and join. Learn from someone what to do to compete. Then get a M1 from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. About 600 dollars delivered to your front door. It only has enbloc clips holding 8 rounds but 3006 packs a punch. They also have cheap ammo you can order. Does not quite meet your desires but its close.

I agree get a M1 Garand or two you can convert one to 308 win and keep the other in 30-06. Even If you don't reload pick up your brass and sell it.
They sell good refurbished ones for $995 with great brand new barrels and stocks. RM1SPECIAL for 30-06 RM1308SPECIAL for 308 Last edited by Jamesconn; 12-28-2012 at 08:00 PM.. Reason: New info |

http://www.odcmp.com/Clubs.htm look under the tool bar for clubs. Just noted they have some re-barreled in 308. Prices start at 525 and go up to 3K for a rare sniper build. |

I bought a used Rem700 sniper bolt .308 with 5:1 twist and bull barrel. FINALLY got it scoped and zero'd today. SWEET little unit. I didnt like the feel of the newer 700's and glad I got mine,....likely 4-5 years old. I see myself reloading ALOT as it was fun fun. I was stacking bullets at 70 yards, cant wait to really see what it can do. Has Nikon Monarch variable scope.....love it too.

What do you plan to use this rifle?
Prepper, shtf, survival??? Trueth is a light weight 308 hunting rifle might serve you well. In reality your rifle will be used for hunting and gathering more than engageing in fire fights like in the movies. So a good light weight hunting rifle is worth its weight in gold! Don't be to concernd with the heavy weight barrels, be more conserned with the rate of twist in the barrel. |
