9" nails as ammo: New slingshot pumpgun!

Here is my latest work... a repeating slingshot crossbow, shooting 9 inch nails.

This is in continuance with my Chu-Ko-Nu based design line. This time, it is bigger than the pencil shooter, but a lot smaller than the chest mounted spear launcher.



The ammo is - nine inch (23 cm) nails. Those are cheap, about 8 Euro-cents a pop (10 Euros for 120 of them). Of course you have to cut of the head, done in about one minute.



The repeating action is done by pressing the butt against the chest and pulling back with both arms, like in a rowing machine. This is needed as you need a lot of draw force to throw the heavy nails - each weighs 76 gramms (1276 gr). The magazine fits ten of them.



With a bit of extra effort, you can very easily enhance the tip by sharpening it. I even hardened the tip of this one.



It works great. I may add more rubber soon, but already this is very effective. Like a Chu-Ko-Nu, but more compact and with a trigger!

I don't have plans, and even if I would, every dimension is derived from the ammo you are using. So you must find the right nails first. If you can't find EXACTLY the same ones I use, all the sizes would be off.

You are very creative, can I ask where you are from? Serious question, is this just a hobby or are those (slingshots and improvised projectiles) what you are left with to defend yourself with?

I am a German. And I do legally own 34 guns, so slingshots is very much a hobby of mine.

Quite often, people believe that we have a very strict gun law in Germany. That's not really the case. You just need a license. If you want to own guns, you can get them (as long as your criminal record is clean). But you have to prove that you are competent, practice frequently and keep the guns in a safe. Makes sense to me.

Wow I am extremely jealous. I am very scientific minded but not quick with engineering. My biological dad is a very good machinist and he machines his own mini-engines and mini-cannons amongst other things but I didn't get that from him and don't talk with him much. Although with a rough idea of dimensions I think I would favor something like this over a gun. One question though, would 9" nails be considered ap rounds on something like Kevlar?
