SKS question

I had someone on another forum offer me a 1954 Russian SKS with a 20 round magazine, it's my understanding that these were made to use the 10 round striper clips. Am I off base in thinking this is an aftermarket part? If it is has anyone here ever used one modified like this? If so how does it compare to an original?

This will be my first SKS (as you can tell) and I want to get a nice original one, not a modified one.

Also what should one like this sell for?

Yes it is an aftermarket mag. It is also a Russian SKS? Buy it. Find an original mag later.

That's what I thought, his email said it's a "Russian Tula 1954r in great condition has bayonet and cleaning kit. One 20rd mag, sling and softcase"

Its a refurbished, does he even know what the mag really is? Either way, a nice buy. What is he asking?

He hasn't given me a price yet, I just got the email this morning with what you saw plus his phone number.

I wanted to do a little digging around before I called him to make sure I knew what I was getting into before I called or met him.

I have never shot a sks I did not like. It is a meat and potatoes gun. every home should have at least one.

I don't know what would be a too high price for one, especially in today's climate. 400 was a really reasonable price before all the hubbub, now I see yugo sks' going for that much around here. Refurbs aren't as valuable as a non, but the ruskie ones are still great guns. Check out SKS boards, they are the authorities on them.

I have a russian, and a yugo. My friend has a norinco, and even that shoots 3 inch groups at 200 yards. Now his norinco ak shoots over a foot to the left at 100 yards even with the front sight all the way to the left. Op,Let me know if you pick it up, because I have 3 or 4 of those box magazines from past conversions you can have for free.

Go with a original 10 round Magazine and buy a few stripper clips when the bolt is held open when it is empty put a Stripper clip in the top of the bolt and slap the rounds down and the gun will quickly be reloaded. The Original Clam shell Magazine is extremely reliable, durable and the best out there over Aftermarket magazines. A few SKS's take the AK-47 Magazines but good luck finding either with all the panic and greed going around.

i recently got a yugo sks for 400... not the greatest trigger in the world, but i like it overall... need to strip and refinish the stock.

It could have been a 20 round fixed mag or a 20 round Tapco, either way they are both "aftermarket" mags. He was probably made an offer he couldn't refuse.

I have seen 20 round fixed mags (just like most stock 10 round mags SKS's come with) , so they are out there.

an SKS with a 20 round mag attached in otherwise unaltered condition is a violation of federal law of "assembling a weapon with more than 10 imported parts"

I would point that out in your negotiations... :D
