The birds are all at my house....40 pounds of black oil sunflower seed.....4 suet cakes....a seperate feeder of neijer seed and 5 pounds of peanut butter a week here. two feeders 10 pounds each of songbird food and sunflower seed. 1 feeder of 10 pounds of cracked corn.

I go through this WEEKLY! We see as many as 100 birds at a time in the yard on most days

Why would they go to your house?

Erm, well to most people it will be nothing other than the winter solstice; to me it is the day before my birthday.

Have usually killed my limit of deer by this time of the year. This year have got everyone I have seen - one. Another friend that has cattle always has them all over the field where the cattle graze. They have seen no deer this year.

Yes I too do not put much into 12/21/2012 ( except it's the day before grandma's BD ) but it is interesting the lack of wildlife.

I had about 20 red birds in my yard at one time the other day. Never had that happen before. Deer, coyotes, raccoons, hoot and screech owls, all good. I haven't seen as many squirrels this year as I usually do though. The coyotes probably ate them.

As to the birds, don't sweat it, they're variable. I've seen seed sit untouched for days, and then suddenly every bird in a five mile area seems to show up all at once and it gets eaten in less than an hour. If the birds continue to stay away, though, I'd suggest watching the skies and seeing if a predator bird has moved into the area. No bird is going to stay near where a falcon, hawk, eagle, or other carnivore has made a home...
Moccasin: you're wrong. 12/21 is National Flashlight Day.

If you had a huge number of deer (or any other species) in your area last year, and much fewer this year, it's probably not that they're hiding but rather the result of disease. Biologists see this happen over and over: An animal population starts to increase rapidly (due to lack of predation, ample food, healthy breeders, etc, etc). As time goes on the number of animals exceed the local food supply and they get hungry and weak, and they overcrowd and start living in unsanitary conditions; and then one of them catches something bad, it cuts through the population like wildfire, and by the time it dies out there are MUCH fewer animals around.

Humans are at GREAT risk of this, these days. Medical technology is keeping the worst diseases at bay but sooner or later, something we can't stop is going to start, and then the death toll will be in the hundreds of millions. If not billions.

There have been some massive die offs in the last few years ,Not sure if an answer has ever been given but I remember thousands of birds falling from the sky in the mid west .
May be a deliberate kill off using air craft and spraying insecticide or something ????
Though my feeers still have left overs they are quiet as well but there are birds in the area,
,Looks like more rain .
The fukashima radiation is still leaking , I wonder ????

Maybe the critters you guys see disappearing are coming to the city. We have no lack here, it's like wild kingdom. We even have a fox hanging around.

Yesterday not a bird all day. No squirrels either. The possum and raccoon did take their feed though but much earlier than usual.

This morning.. it is after 1:30 now and no birds all day... Temp 54 degrees and cloudy.. nothing weird in the weather. This is a first in 15yrs.

Since my office window faces the feeders I'd see them if they came. I just think it is weird that for whatever reason the birds are hiding. Since we live rural there is no noise to bother them.

Just an observation. Anybody else notice anything weird?
Strangely enough I have noticed an Increase in birds the past couple days. Everything from Robins to Jays which is unusual where I live let alone for this type of year.

I've noticed that is has been getting steadily colder over the past weeks. It is particularly cold today, and supposed to get even colder as the week goes on. Even the sun seems to be shining less each day.
