Hey there everyone I am very glad to be back with you!
I was doing some reading this afternoon and seen where the USGS has removed seismic events from their map in the past but fogot to remove them from ANSS. Well long story short I was looking at the ANSS backbone system a few moments ago and noticed that there was activity today that began all the way on the west coast and proceeded to be picked up all across the country in a time period that would consist of something moving very rapidly from west to east. No big deal right? Well I looked at almost every monitoring station on the map and each one shows almost the same thing jsut shortly after the last one west of it showed. Anyone have an answer as to why this was not reported anywhere? For those of you that wish to check it out I will include the link to the ANSS back bone site. You can see the events of all stations by looking at heliplot. I am curious as to what you all have to say! http://earthquake.usgs.gov/monitoring/anss/ Last edited by Tallman49269; 11-20-2012 at 01:42 AM.. Reason: Forgot link to needed website |

They don't "forget" to remove them from ANSS.
You need to give times and stations if you want people to look. For an event to show up staggered west to east is normal. Seismic waves take time to propagate. If an earthquake was removed, it wasn't a real quake to start with (or it was a distant quake that registered as local). Or it might disappear because it no longer meets the selection criteria for the particular map. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/errata.php |

I don't need to give a time or station because it was every station on the United States map. The event began at around 10:10 in the west and continued in a few min incriments from west to east.

Wave propagation delays.

But you choose to live in the U.S., none the less? Interesting. I would suggest that the U.S. Government isn't the most evil or corrupt in the world, but if you really feel that way, moving out would be an obvious choice for you. Ever consider it?

There are of of anomalous initial reading from seismographs. There can be some initial readings that can later turn out to be incorrectly located, or non-natural, such as explosive demolition (think: mining) that could be detected locally, but do not actually propagate like a tremor would.

Living in the rockies there have been many "earthquakes" reported that were later found to be nothing more than rock slides. While I agree to not always trust them, there are legitimate reasons for the reports being pulled.
