There are too many variables but my choices are a .45 M-191A1 pistol and a AR-15 with a 20 inch chrome lined heavy barrel like an M-16A4.

As I already own both of those, the choice is easy for me, if I was starting from scratch I would get an AK-47.

1. Long - Savage .308 scoped bolt

2. Medium - AR-15

3. Short/"around the homestead" - Mossberg 12 gauge

4. Last ditch - Glock 17

...my current choices, and I have them

22 pistol, 45 acp pistol, .308 M1 Garand and 12 gauge semi-auto should cover any contingency from gathering small game to turkey to moose to boogermen.

Don't need to buy anything but if money was no object then an increase in ammo supply and types of ammo for these guns would be my only addition. Especially for the 12 gauge.

Well that is the cool thing about a good AR-15 with a long barrel, the rifle is actually capable of 1,000 yard shots, now I am not, but the AR-15 rifle (with the heavy barrel) will do the assault-rifle thing almost a shot gun up close, the carbine thing being light weight for your medium range work and will reach out as far as you can shoot thus substituting for a long range bolt action rifle. Yes it is a compromise but some of the best minds in the world have been working on this for fifty years and it is my opinion that they have succeeded in building an all purpose rifle.

Mine's always the same. Thinking you're going to be slinging a bunch of rifles on foot is not realistic. As you can see from the thread some are naming up to 10. There are going to be a lot of disappointed people when the time comes.

Have a pistol that you are proficient with in a caliber you are comfortable shooting. Have a rifle, rinse and repeat.

Default When the SHTF,

Which Cal. you want is a personal thing, .357 S&W revolver, Mossberg 12ga.,2 00buck fallowed by 3 one ounce slugs at 1600 fps, kicks like a mule, but thats ok. My 100yd plus is a MN in 7.62-54R or Turkish mauser in 8mm. Like I said its all personal, but the first 2 I grab are the S&W and Mossy. Good luck and Adios. Keep your senses sharp, your weapon loaded and ready. God bless.

These have proven to bring food to the table around here. Moose would probably be largely extinct after a few weeks anyway, so I'd keep the usual small game set with me on my day trips to the woods:
Sauer & Sohn SxS 12/70 (by far the best 12 cal shotty that I have, also have the same gun in 16/70 that is even better but I usually have less ammo sitting around for that one)
Tikka T3 Hunter in .222 Remington w/ Meopta Meostar 3-12x56RD for the occasional far away bird. And come to think of it now as I write, in SHTF I would extend the usual trip into the evening by stalking roe deer nearby. But I'm pretty sure they would have shared the fate of the moose population pretty quickly after any food shortage would have kicked in. Overall popularity of hunting might turn into a problem, actually.
Occasional walks to hazel grouse areas w/ a whistle and the Ruger 10/22.
I'll just leave the fourth gun and take the (pointing) dog with me instead. Is that ok?

I don't really perceive, even in a serious SHTF situation that anyone would bother to come here with bad intent so acquiring very specialized weapons for home defense instead of hunting would be mostly a waste of resources. That sort of event in its unlikelihood is pretty far on the list of things that I'd see as threats. However, should anyone would get such a brilliant idea, things for him might get uncomfortable with items that were left off of the list.

Leave your guns, take a bow, everyone will be trying to get ammo when SHTF, arrows can made. Hunt and move only at night.

It would be nice to have something with good penetration but isn't that heavy, so I'd suggest an ar-15 with the .50 Beowulf conversion kit. It's marketed as a vehicle checkpoint rifle, since it isn't easily deterred by car glass, metal, etc. The ammunition is fairly hard to find, but if you stocked up on it, you could conserve it for when you really have to use it.

My opinion is that you should utilize common rounds, because all these sexy off caliber rounds will be hard to come by and are not worth the cost-benefit.

1) Common .556 AR style Rifle (pay the extra $$$ for quality or build it yourself).
--Try and go for 1-7 rate twist to hand variety of bullet grains.

2) .308/Nato AR platform rifle
-- This can be utilized as a longer ranged rifle while having the flexibility of using it as an every day defense rifle if needed. Rounds are common enough.

3) .22 Rifle and side arm - I like the Ruger 10/22 and Ruger MKIII for its ability to customize and change to fit my needs. I want something that you can just throw in a assualt pack or light enough to carry and use if the situation arises.
-- Probably the most important rifle you will own, due to the amount of ammunition out there.

4) 9mm/.45 ACP side arms - both very common rounds. I own a Springfield 1911 Champion Fully Loaded....and love it. Beretta or Glock for 9mm because of police department usage and common parts.

5) Crossbow/Bow - Like mentioned in several posts....virtually unlimited ammunition and noise discpline.

So, .556, .308, .22LR, .45ACP/9mm and a bow variation.

I do like the AK47/74 alot, and the round is common...I just decided to go with what I was most comfortable with.

Just my trusty magic wand. I wouldn't have to worry about guns. Just turn the bad guys into toads. Done.

Everyone has there own "special blend". It optimally will be a main battle rifle, sidearm, shotgun, and a long range rifle. In whatever flavors you prefer.

That could actually work if:
-there are still any left to buy (stupid 1986 ban)
-transport
-power source
-enough ammo
-government implodes (before they can ban it)

*Hardening against EMP recommended

However others with larger budget still a possible threat

May also want anti-tank weapon & mobile artillery if $ is no constraint

Default Keep it simple

Eventually you will be without a vehicle. Keep it simple. I would want a battle rifle in at least .308 so I can protect myself and hunt. For me it would be an M-1a/M-14, AR-10 or FAL. Sidearm would be a 1911 .45. I would feel a bit naked without a Bolt action due to reliability. Then there would be the problem of how to carry the most amount of ammunition as I can. Safety in numbers!
