I still don't get the point of a firestarter, that requires fire, to start it.
I have to really think about this. I ask myself "Self, what are the chances I will find myself out in the woods, without adequate clothing, rain gear or a ferro rod, yet I thought to bring 16 oz of Thermite just in case?" I mean, if thermite is what you are relying on, then maybe you need to rethink your plan to go into the woods in the first place. Now, if you plan to use it to ignite a magnesium engine block from a VW or Porsche, and hose it down with water as a 4rth of July fanalie, then I can see the value of it!! |

Heee, heee ,heee....yeeeaaahhhh, were all about the stupid ideas here!

It's useful stuff, but there needs to be an easier way to ignite it!
Come on folks, think think think. What happens when the magnesium fire lighters are no more???? Do we have to set up a magnesium mine somewhere or think outside the box?? |

I've always wanted a supply of thermite, but not as a fire starter.
I thought it would be something good to have on hand in case TSHTF, and I needed an alternate escape route. In my neck of the woods the lumber company's put gates on any road they can, IF things got bad enough I'd like to be able to melt the locks off and get out using a route no one else is. Again I would only do this if TSHTF, and I had no other way out.... |

I still fee a ferro rod, and 2 magnesium rods of the same size are the unbeatable combination. Mag blocks are nice, but they were meant for emergencies, and they don't have enough of a striker on them. It always burns out before you are halfway through the block.
If I could make the ultimate combination, I would have one 7/8" X 6" ferro rod (same size as a dinner candle), and 2 magnesium, rods the same size as that. Heck, you could even do with one mag rod. I would be using the Ferro rod without the magnesium most of the time anyway. And yes, I have started fires in the rain with ferro and magnesium. |
