Best defensive measure for a 'gun free' zone?

I work IT at a university so I always have needle nose pliers on me, along with several screwdrivers and a ball-peen hammer (yes it does come in handy in the IT field, especially with mounting switches in racks that aren't made to spec).

It was nicely hardened steel scribe that i used daily and i had it in plan sight in a leather holder on my belt.

It is still in my machinist box and i will always claim its a metal scribe even if i had to use it as a weapon.

I am disabled and have a number of walking staffs that are very good weapons and i have even taken them on airplanes and through TSA checkpoints.

Well, if your looking for defense against firearms, I would suggest a kevlar vest.

The biggest problem probably won't be while you're on campus -- it'll be when you have to park in the rough areas near campus and walk unarmed from there -- since you'll have to leave your gun in your car. Try to avoid those areas, especially at night.

Check and see if there are self-defense classes on campus.
Stanford University (don't work there, bike thru campus) has an escrima club that I've seen practicing on campus and I've seen people practicing with Yawara sticks.

Get yourself a good walking stick, like a shillelagh. They were originally used as fighting clubs. Load it with a couple of ounces of lead. You can use it as a club, or with a little practice you can launch it across a room with great force. Just don't practice on campus, because that will show that it is a weapon, and some F***ktard will try to ban it then.

The best form of non lethal self defense is pepper spray. The powerful Fox Labs or Sabre Red stuff is just so potent its going drop anyone just as fast as a gun shot. What makes it really great though is that its non lethal so you dont need to hesitate to use it like you would a taser, knife or club. Shoot first and ask questions later.

Anyone who tells you pepper spray wont stop an attacker has never been hit by the strong stuff. The simple fact that it blinds you instantly makes it a much more effective weapon than other alternatives. Hell i've seen MMA fighters drop in seconds to it. "Whats that, you've been training for 7 years, i bought this can yesterday over the counter for 5 bucks. Sure is a shame I just dropped you in 2 seconds"

I go to school where it is illegal to carry as well. To me it is a matter of choosing between obeying the law or potentially staying alive. An easy choice, really.

I am facing the same issue. Going to be starting at a university in the winter term of 2013. I currently go to community college so before I get out of my car I leave my gun in the glove box. However, as stated, when I start at the university next year I will be living in a dorm following their rules. I was thinking a small bat in a big book bag. Maybe a double zip model with part of the handle sticking out. So just reach over my head, grab the handel, and pull it out. I am sure though in this P.C. day and age any thing you use, even items allowed on campus will not help you. The college would probably expel, or suspend both indaviduals involved in the fight even if one was defending themselves. Just the way this modern world is becomeing.

I read where you were part of a lobby group to lift the ban. Could you not ALSO argue that since they ban all firearms/weapons from campus that they are 100% responsible for your safety 100% of the time on campus should a tragedy happen? You get mugged, sue em, beat up by bullies, sue em, harassed by hari krishnas....sue em since they weren't there by your side with campus security 24/7 to protect you. Costing them money is always a good tactic. Lol Didn't it work against Wal Mart?

I must say, i hadnt thought about this, i was going to send an email to my dean requesting him to reconsider. The state that i live in, it is LEGAL to carry on all public college campuses, my college is private so they are their own animal. while it isnt illegal, it can and will get you expelled.

I will pointedly bring this to his attention and cite the crime statistics for the past year and see what comes from it.
