You’re too close, they can get under you gun barrel quickly and then grapple…think of the 21” rule! |

I'd drop and start shooting in the direction that noise came from. Silly twit didn't have a round in his gun before he came out, and gave away his position and intention by making a bunch of noise. Probably thinks he doesn't have to aim carefully and that it won't produce recoil. Doesn't realize a long gun bashes into things indoors, door frames, refrigerators, and stuff. Easy pickins'.
By the way, if you need to kill someone, you'd best just do it. If you don't need to kill, you'd best not be trying to intimidate. Having the big gun does not make you boss. "It isn't always being fast, or even accurate that counts; it's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing; they blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger...I won't." - John Bernard Books played by John Wayne in "The Shootist". |

Remember a few things about self defense. A robber does not want to shoot people, he wants to steal stuff and not be caught. when you include a weapon on your side, now your a threat.
Another thing too. The robber did not hesitate to enter your home and steal. If you see an intruder, you will likely hesitate to fire. He will not. In virtually every location in the USA self defense only has one role. To protect yourself from deadly harm. Not to protect your house from being robbed. There is difference. Some areas are friendlier to this subject than others. I have firearms at home, but will make an attempt to use pepper spray or to verbally warm the person who enters. Yes, these people are scum. However, to keep you from not looking like those scum to a jury will cost you many thousands of dollars in legal fees possibly. Closely look at all the local and state laws on self defense. It is also wise to talk to local law enforcement and your lawyer about the subject. Most are happy to talk about this. August is usually fair season. Most sheriff districts have a public booth at a county fair. The other option to look into is young ones. It is more likely a kid will come across that gun at your home than your house being robbed. There's nothing wrong about self defense in the home, just look into all the factors well. It is a big responsibility. |

I think it a valid tactic, I use to work in a prison and know that most of the people that break into houses are cowards and hope there is no one there. I don't live in a mansion so if a action is being slid in my house you would be able to hear it no matter where you are standing. Plus the bad guys know the sentence for burglary is allot less then attempted murder or murder and getting away fast is the best option for them. Like I said cowards not trained assassins. If you are the target of an assassin then I would not rack the round for a simple home invasion I would .

all the bedrooms in my house are upstairs, and the stairs have a 90 degree turn half way up with a loft overlooking down to the first story.
my xd 45 has 13 rounds and no safety to make a sound, so all i have to do is wait at that loft for someone to come around the corner to come up the stairs. they can steal whatever they want until the cops arrive, but if they round that corner, that's the last step they make. I also like where my bedrooms are located because there is little to no risk of penetrating bedroom walls in a firefight. Any shooting angles will be 1) on the first floor or 2)up and down the stairs not endangering my family, or my neighbors. I love my XD, but a shotgun is on my list. can't miss shooting down my stairs, and if someone doesn't come into that site picture, then they aren't a threat to my family's safety yet. |

The second they come through the door or window my life is in danger, as well as my family, they don't get any further than that if i can help it. better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6

I think the most intimidating thing about a shotgun would be the brilliant flash that occurs the split second before the load of buckshot makes contact with your person.

You ever see on police footage tv shows when the police are activly shooting the criminals and they still wont back down. Those the the bad guys that wont be scared by racking a shotgun.
If i hear someone break into my house I will always assume they are armed, armored and have the intent to cause harm. Basically I imagine that those maniacs from the north hollywood shootout are in my house. Would it scare me...hell ya! I am however not a hardend criminal who may or may be on PCP. Hope for the best, expect the worst. |

I will take surprise over intimidation. Think about it. Why are you racking the gun? Because YOU'RE intimidated to some degree and racking the gun to intimidate the perp in hopes of avoiding a gun battle. So if you go to your gun when you're intimidated, what do you think he goes to? A biscuit? That's why I carry concealed. Open is legal in my state but I don't do it. If I'm in a store and a bad guy comes in to rob it, I have no clue why he's there until he makes a move. If my gun is wide open it's already out of play because he knows I've got it and all he has to do is keep his out of sight and come from behind me. He has the advantage. So I would rather mine be hid so that I atleast have the opportunity to use it if he turns his back so that I have a chance to get it out. So in either case, home or store, i would prefer to stay quiet and out of sight, when perp turns facing me, and pull the trigger before his brain can process what his eyes are seeing.

I say just keep a gallon of gasoline next to your bed. If you hear something, just start dousing the hallway and floors with gas and light that baby up. No robber expects the owner to burn the house down. Now THATS intimidating.

Yep, that makes sense!
My son has a big huge Norway rat he keeps for a pet. That sucker weighs about 5 pounds. He walks it on a leash every evening. His house is the only one on the block that has never been burgled. You don't need no stinkin' shotgun! Crazy works just fine! |

Would you go to the source with a 1911 without a round in the pipe already? I do not understand why someone would even get close enough to the threat so that they can hear it before the rack the slide. Shotgun or no shotgun, I am not letting anyone have predetermined knowledge of the weapon I am bringing to slay them with. Most body armor can defeat the shotgun round....well most main stream buckshots, slugs, bird shots etc....If they are Armored and hear that you coming with a shotgun, well it may not only not intimidate them but motivate them in a fire fight.
