I've tried to be prepared enough that I wouldn't have to think about it. If there was time to buy more stuff, fine... but if that time is past, then be prepared and avoid going out. One, you need to protect you're own stuff. Two, you are potentially putting yourself into an extremely violent situation for which you could be killed or injured with no medical help available. Best to stay in, stay safe, and let the rest get "selected" out.
If you're going to loot... it better be day 1, any other time will be slim pickins.
