Woooohoooo!!

I was out putting down fresh bedding for my cow herd today. All 2 of them. lol
My heifer tripod was facing away from me, and she seems to be really getting wide all of a sudden, so I think my little bull snickers must have got his job done.

I am so excited about this whole deal, since she just turned 2 at the end of November. He is about 6 months younger than she is, so I wasn't sure how long it might take to do his business.

Not sure how far along she might be, but am looking forward to a new baby in the future. A jersey/holstein cross, and I am hoping for a little heifer.

Congratulations! I remember my first year with baby goats. It was so exciting.

I've had goats for years, and have a bunch of babies.
I worked for the last 2 years at a local dairy, and I have raised both of these cows since the day they were born.
I've birthed out a bunch of calves for other people, but this will be my first calf here at my place. She is holstein and he is jersey, so it will be interesting to see what the calf will look like.

I'm really excited about this, and hope all goes well.

It's a girl!!!

I went out this morning, and had a little surprise waiting for me. Momma seems fine, and she is now in the mudroom warming up and drying off since we had snow last night.

I had the dogs out last night going potty, and thought I heard her making more noise than usual, but had no idea.

Time to go to the vet supply and get some meds and some fresh colostrum from a local dairy just to make sure. Momma has milk, but she is a brand new heifer, and not used to being milked yet. I have no stanchion to put her in so I will buy the colostrum rather than get flattened by a panicky cow.

I will then put her back with momma and let nature work for me. Just wanted to share the good news. Now for a cute name, any suggestions?

Wow! From "I think she's pregnant" to "It's a girl" in a matter of a few days. I'm glad it doesn't happen that fast with women.

Oh, I almost forgot, congrats.

Just came in from bottle feeding the new baby. They will figure out the nursing thing, but in the mean time I am making sure she has a full belly.

Having been around cattle all my life, they know how to nurse from the moment they drop. Some don't if it was a particularly bad birthing. They get the colostrum in the first meal. If they don't get what was meant to be imparted to them it can cause them problems down the road. Too much help can harm.

Our heifers calve every year. Mostly with no help at all.

Congrats.
Merry Christmas.
Take care.

This being her first calf, she was a little reluctant to let baby nurse. I ended up snubbing her off to a large post and tying her back legs to another and then showing baby where to go.

I went out this morning, and she was sucking for all she was worth, and momma was letting her. Tripod was quite put out with me yesterday, but she will get over it I'm sure.

I have named the baby Daisy Mae. She has one little white spot in the middle of her forehead, and it is shaped exactly like a hairbow. It's so cute.

Yes, I keep my eyes on that jersey bull at all times.

I was going to suggest "Surprise" as a name, since she surprised you as far as arriving when she did. Daisy Mae is cute, though.

Congrats, "grandpa"!

Haha, cows are great, I used to have a pet called Angus (guess the breed ) who grew up to be about 500kg when we sent him off to the butcher shop.

Congrats on the little lass.

She will be a week old tomorrow, and she is really getting rowdy out in that pen.

She was rampaging all over today when I was forking hay and filling water. Always a good sign when they are healthy.

I took this yesterday when I was out forking hay. She is really getting big, and is already eating hay right next mama.

I think you should have a name the calf thread.

I'll say licorice. Kinda goes with tripod and snickers.
