I can't get the solar still plastic to fit in the Altoids tin. Next, I tried 1 mil. No, it won't fit.
I didn't think .5 mil. "painter's drop cloth" is appropriate. I have Katadyn Micropur MP-1 water purifier tablets, but it is not realistic to expect to restock from the store. My Platypus and Sawyer filter "gravity filter system" sure isn't going to "fit". I will have another look at that .5 mil. plastic. edit: It will fit, but not much else will "fit" then. This Kit includes as numbered in the photo:
(1) Tin - Also usable for Reflecting (2) Surgical Razor (3) Hacksaw (4) Pencil (5) Mini Prybar (6) Peanut Lighter - uses lighter fluid, has a flint, and is sealed watertight when the lid is screwed on. (7) P-38 Can Opener (8) Compass (9) Strike anywhere matches x7 and Cotton swab x7 on a wooden stick, inside waterproof bag (10) Large Band aids (11) Butterfly Band aids (12) Single Use Burn Gel x 2 (13) Single Use Anitbiotic (14) LED Light (15) Wire Aircraft Key Ring (16) Flat and Cross head screw drivers (17) Post it notes (18) Nylon Velcro carry case for the tin. Once the tin is in there there is stil a little room at both ends for other things. The case Velcros to your belt of backpack and stays pretty dry. (19) Cash All of the kits in this forum are amazing. The contents of my case are what they are because of experience in what I always needed when I was stuck somewhere. This thread has taught me that I should probably make more than one of these because they can have such a varied purpose. I have learned that I can probably get even more stuff in there. Thanks to all, very educational. |

I really like some of the features of that kit you have their Firstly it fits inside an altoids tin so you defiantly have met the rules of the comp Some of the features of the kit I really like are the mini SD card with details on it you can keep photo copies of important documents like ID contact details in a digital format and it takes up basically no room what so ever. Very handy if you need to produce credentials if challenged. Other thing is the GI can opener I know it sounds silly but in a SHTF situation if you are scavenging if you get stuck away from your prep supplies a GI can opener is something simple that make things easy if you find a can of soup. My kit is very much geared up for wilderness survival but I think i will include one in my kit just in case. But I am going to critically appraise other parts of you kit please don’t take it personally I think it is important and I would welcome the same on my kit. But I don’t think that you have nearly enough different methods of lighting fires and that cannot be under estimated. Fire is everything when you are trying to survive in a non escape and evasion SHTF. Fire warms you, fire comforts you it boost your moral no end if you have a good fire going, it can be used to cock on, if you have no purification tables it sterilizes water, it keeps wild animals away, it can be used for signalling, it can be used to fell timber and cut it to length, it can be used fore hardening and straitening or bending wood for weapons, tool or shelter the list goes on. This is why I included so many forms of fire lighting and tinder. Two types of matches A Thick fire steel Cotton from a tampon Char Cloth Rubber Inner tube High carbon steel blade that I can strike sparks from piece flint Kite line for sting of a fire bow if I have no boot laces I really like the split pea lighter but it relies on petrol and when that runs out you are basically stuffed unless you can get more. You might be able to light the alcohol prep pad with sparks from the flint wheel on the lighter and then you are stuffed again. Then you have no options you would have to rely on some form of friction fire lighting probably. Just a though that is my only criticism of your kit but then again it is your EDC and if you are happy with it then go for it I would be inclined to replace that lighter with strike any ware matches and a good fire steel. Just one question why the bar magnet ? is their not a risk of wiping info on the SD card |

Thanks for the compliments and criticisms both are equally helpfull. Since posting my kit I have added A small ziptie, A Fresnel lens, a candle wick and some waterproof matches and a striker. I have also added a mini light from a light up bobber, its about the size of a toothpick and is good to mark trails, or as a signal. None of these items take up significant space and were easy to fit in. In my wifes kit I added a Beeswax lipbalm with a wick in the middle. It works very nice and was a trick I picked up un this forum. I am waiting to win the competition to get a sweedish firesteel. I have made fire with stone and a bow before. If you know how to keep an ember you use lots less matches. Its a difficult skill to do and even harder to do it safely, but its a good one. The magnet can be used to make a compass, to pick up objects, to prevent objects from falling out of the tin and the SD memory works different than Magnetic memory or a harddrive and is not erased by the magnet. Ive heard rumors that super strong magnets can do some damage but this magnet will not. Last edited by Dreamsmith; 11-26-2009 at 06:29 PM.. |

Altoids Tin
- 50ft 40# test braided line (lashing, fishing, etc) - 20ft 20# test monofilament line (fishing, lashing, etc.) - 15ft 10# test monofilament line (fishing, sewing, sutures, etc.) - 3ft general purpose sports wrap ( bandage ) - 1 Knife Blade (cutting, spearhead, GP) - 1 Razor Blade - 1 Surgical Blade - 3 Waterproof Matches - 7 Hooks: 1 Large, 3 Medium, 3 Small ( Fishing) - 3 Sewing Needles: 2 Straight, 1 Curved (Sewing, Suturing) - 3 Welding Striker Flints (Fire Starting) - 1 Chrome plated brass panel ( signaling ) - 5 Safety Pins: 1 Large, 2 Medium, 2 Small (GP) - 1 Button Compass ( Navigation ) - 2 Sections of Band Saw Blade (Sawing, Flint Striker, gig head) - 1 Marine Whistle (Signaling) - 1 Loupe (Fire Starting) - 1 Cotton ball soaked in lighter fluid in nitrile glove finger (Fire Starting) - 3 grams Potassium Permanganate ( Water Treatment, Antiseptic) - 3 grams Sodium Metabisulfite - 1/2 Oven Bag (Water Treatment[boiling&chemical]/Collection) - 1 section of parafilm (Fire Starting) - 2 sections of match striker taped to inside of lid: 1 Large, 1 Small (Fire Starting) - 3.5 ft x 2.75 ft section of painter's plastic (shelter waterproofing) - 2 stainless steel wires (snares) - Some electrical tape wrapped around vials (GP, Bandaging) - some cotton (rattle control, fire starting) Ok so, I know somebody is going to want to know why potassium permanganate and sodium metabisulfite. Well, for one there's no estimating how much treatment chemical is needed for the amount of water you have @ it's contamination level; you simply add a very small amount of potassium permanganate until the water turns a good solid pink and stays that way for 15-30 minutes, then add small amounts of sodium metabisulfite until the pink disappears, viola, drink. For another, 3 grams treats about 40 gallons of water. Last edited by damnsloppy; 11-27-2009 at 07:15 PM.. |

Attachment 22890
Attachment 22891 I started byputting reflective aluminum reflective tape on the bottom for signaling. Then I wrapped 3' of electrical tape around the perimeter of the tin. This can be used with the alcohol swabs for ban aids, I also put 3-3" strips of medical tape on the bottom of the tin. I also wrapped 9' of 18 guage copper wire on the inside of the tin. This can be used for snares, or lashing limbs together for a shelter. Attachment 22892 Attachment 22893 I made a spear point for small game hunting, frog gigging, spear fishing or it could be lashed to a short stick for a weapon. I cut 2 holes in the lid and recessed a small compass and a magnifing lense into the lid. I also stuck 20 floursent trail markers on the inside and outside of the lid. I put my initials on the ones on the outside in case I was lost, I could leave these as bread crumbs for my searchers. The other ones I left blank. These also make pretty good fire starters. kit1.jpg kit2.jpg All of the contents: 9 feet 18 ga. copper wire 1- mini bic lighter 3-3" strips of medical tape 1-3" strip aluminum tape 3' of electrical tape 1- button compass 1- magnifiying lense 50 feet of 14lb. fishing line 25 feet of 8 lb fishing line 10 feet of sinew 1- large sewing needle 1- small buck knife 1- solitare mini mag light 1- zip lock sandwich bag.( for storing water or irrigate a wound) 25 feet of 14 lb fishing line is wrapped around the ziplock bag 14- paper waterproof matches with 2 stiking strips ( the rest of the fishing line and the sinew is wrapped around these) 4- strike anywhere wooden matches 1-crushed beef bullion cube 2- salt packets 1-butterfly type bandaid 1-package antibiotic ointment 3- alcohol swabs ( can also be used for band aids or fire straters) 1- small vile of iodine ( can also be used to purify water) 5- water purification tablets ( wrapped in foil) 2-Ibuprofun ( wrapped in foil) 2- hydrocodone ( wrapped in foil) 1- tiny scalpel 3- different sized fish hooks 2- split shots I accidently left the needle out of the photo, but it will fit. |

This picture shows the plastic netting for packaging produce, the REI magnesium bar because magnesium rod is only sold in unbroken packages for welding, and a knuckle bandage that did not make it into the Altoids tin "final entry". Oh, the Excedrin and the benzokalium chloride wipe didn't make it in either. I could make a photo of more things that didn't make it in, including After Bite.
I had to include this photo, to see the plastic netting. The rather bulky 45x45" sheet plastic you can imagine. ![]() Here is the final list: water purification: 45x45 inches .5 mil sheet plastic for solar still, the tin is two water receptacles food: P38, wire and nylon coated stainless steel wire, stainless steel "memory wire" circles and crimping beads for snares, stainless steel "memory wire" and plastic netting for making a fish trap shelter: cord and wire may be used for lashing frame components of shelter navigation: keyfob compass fire: REI Storm matches and striker, Trango Piranha Alpine Knife to cut notch and round hole and use cord for a friction fire medical: 3% solution Hydrogen Peroxide, 5 butterfly bandages, Xeroform burn bandage, tick remover tool signal: shiny inside bottom portion of the Altoids tin cutting tool: Trango Piranha Alpine Knife, carbide replacement scraper blade, Piranha jig saw blade and 80 lb. SpiderWire Stealth Braid wrap note: My "first-aid kit" consists of help for things that incapacitate me, to the extent it is difficult to think clearly. If I had the fortitude, and I do not, there is sufficient room for a surgical kit from a medical supply. ![]() This is a closeup of the items that made it in the Altoids tin. The sheet plastic and the plastic netting were vacuum packaged, using the Ziplock vacuum system. I used that system, because it is portable it lives in the BOV. The edges were sealed using my neighbors machine. If I had to, I could make a "hot wire" for sealing the edges. I didn't have to. ![]() |

Over the years, I have tried to pick up, purchase, and save a multitude of small but applicable devices and throw them into a gear box. This has allowed me to 'build' any number of 'kits' that can be thrown quickly into a travel bag, etc. The smaller Altoids can presents a challenge because of the things I deem most important, a blade, water, fire and shelter there simply is not enough room to cover these basics very well. Having said that, I have been able to assemble a few that offer me some basics which I could depend on. Here is one.
I used the smallest of the Altoids cans. ![]() I then wrapped it with (30) pieces of 90mph tape in various sizes. Then I carefully inserted the contents chosen. The contents vary in the tins that I have made, and I have a tendency to make several at one time labelling them for a specific purpose (fire, med, tools, etc.). ![]() ![]() 1. Small Altoids tin, wrapped in 90mph tape. 2. Accessory bag, with matches, 2 sinkers, 1 swivel, 1 Simm card w/ personal data and photo's of family members. 3. Treble hooks. 4. Condom for water 5. $20 6. Razor Blade 7. 3 Band-Aids 8. Small compass 9. Extra battery for light 10. Nail, wrapped with 100 ft of 4lb fishing line 11. LED light 12. Swiss Army Knife 13. Small point. (although this small point was probably a Shawnee point used for birds, it not only has brought me good luck since I found it as a boy in Ohio, but I also find that it serves as a reminder that a civilization can thrive despite hardships). 14. Waterproof mini-fob containing: -3 aspirin -4 water purification tablets -2 cotton balls- -3 multivitamins -3 No Doze -6 match heads -1 sliver of wet start 15. 100 feet of booby-trap wire, spooled. I then wrapped the loaded can with 50 ft of 550 cord and placed it on top of a standard magazine, next to a .25 Auto for comparison. I like the rings on a few of the items, because I could easily transfer these items onto a cord I could make to wear around my neck. ![]() |
