Valid question. Guns are a tool, they must be used appropriately. Capping strays with gun fire, the noise could draw ACLU barbarians to your position; Do you want that?
Here's my tips
A. Fence in your position as feasible, this will help keep land predators out.
If you couldn't make a palisade(That thing the Germans built around their oil refinery in .'The Land that Time Forgot'). you
could make a barricade of junk appliances and secure nail-studded boards
atop them(sharp points up).
B. Throw your food garbage in the creek. THe water dissolves the smell and that helps reduce predator attraction.
C. Burn your garbage, food or otherwise; after dark, less liable to attract barbarians, too(smoke plume less liable to be seen at night).
D. Don't let small children and pets roam free, that attracts predators.
