Here is the thing. You believe that the S will hit the F. And, you believe it is your duty to be prepared to take care of yourself and those who depend on you when it does. That means you need to be wise enough, now, to use the resources available to you and get ready.

Yes, you have an obligation to the larger society but your first obligation is to yourself and your family. If you can get food stamps and do not need them, use them to stockpile food. The day may come when having done that will be the best thing you can have done for the larger community. Then, you will be one less person needing help in the time of real crisis.

If you have more than you need, then, you can share with those who could not or did not prepare. At least you will not waste the food stamps. The food will go into a food bank that you control for future need. If having the food stamps allows you to use cash money to prepare in other ways such as getting solar panels or a reliable source of potable drinking water, then they have been put to good use and not ended up in someone’s garbage can.

If you don’t take them, they are going to be taken anyway. Is it better that someone responsible, like you, control how they are used or that their value is wasted? Don’t let the day come when you look back and wish you had used those food stamps to stockpile the things you and those who depend on you will desperately need. Just think of the great food bank you could personally create with $600 a month. Think about who your forethought would be able to provide for.

really we should do away with these programs all together. you can give me all the sad stories that you want but bottom line if your going to have kids you need to make sure you make enough and that you have enough saved period. we are all given the same chance yes some may start off with more than others. but im not talking about pulling down 100K+ a year. i use to work in the oil field pre obama i put in 65-80 hour weeks. these people can do it too they are just too lazy. no one should ever have to go to work just so another can stay home. all this greed has brought us to where we are now! i hope this house of cards we have for an economy comes down soon!!

... What are those kids gonna grow up like if everyone who dislikes their mother's lifestyle sits back and hates on it? Their only role models are their parents. Instead of shunning a woman for her ineptness at raising a family, pitch in and see if you can't make a difference in those kids' lives. Maybe then her daughters will turn out a bit different, and not follow the same lifestyle.

If all you who have posted on this board did that for every family you've described, maybe the next generation would have less people on food stamps.

those kids are a lost cause they have been taught to use the system since they were born. i may come off as harsh but as it is i really couldnt care less about someones kids when they have been living offthe tax payers dime. i have enough troubles at home with taking care of my own family. again if a women doesnt have the means to take care of her kids maybe she shouldnt have any same goes for a man.

you should only recieve what you work for nothing makes me more angry than thier sense of entitlement. if you dont work and earn a decent living you do not deserve a nice house, car, cell phone, good food, nice clothes etc....

I would be very surprised if any significant subset of longterm food stamp recipients were thinking like this. I doubt the longterm crowd is thinking about much of anything at all, other than, perhaps, "where did I leave the crackpipe and/or infant".

Someone (not me) might make a convincing argument that the current food assistance program needs to be taken down from the inside, plowed under, and turned into something else more productive.

OK. My rant. We have Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Air Force and Coasties that have to use WIC and EBT just to survive and they are the ones that have to put it on the line everyday. The way our country continually treats the junior enlisteds with families is a crime. What is wrong with this picture people???

What SSanf said is an excellent example of how a large portion of the population, perhaps even a majority, are thinking.

It may be food stamps, Medicare, Welfare or health care reform, people believe it is okay to "work" the system to get just a little more for themselves. Here in California municipal employee unions have spent considerable sums electing local officials who granted them sweetheart pension deals. Retiring police officers, firefighters, and trash collectors have pushed several cities and counties to the edge of bankruptcy.

We need cops. We need firefighters. We even need a social safety net to save those who find themselves in a temporary bind.

For too many that safety net has become a hammock and with each new person rigging a platinum pension and each new survivalist stocking up with unnecessary food-stamp swag, the hammock is about to give.

Well the main thing that gets me about this **** is that EVERY single one of these people I see with food stamps (and all sorts of other government help im sure) DONT NEED IT! Most are able bodied people driving nice ass cars parked in a handicaped spot. They all have 4+ kids and all 4 of those kids have 4 different dads.

Now im not one to take handouts and neither is my fiance unless she ABSOLUTELY HAS TO! She is 19 years old, colorblind, photosensitive, and legaly blind. Therefore she cant get a license... ever. We also live in an area where there are no bus's or taxi's. This limits her as to where she can work and what she can do. She WAS working at a church daycare program making OK money ($9 an hour, still $h!t money but in these times you cant be picky) Well about 8 months ago we find out were going to have a baby ! At this point she doesnt have medical coverage and is giving her mom most of her paychecks to cover bills and help her mom since she is single and struggling trying to foot the bill for her 3 daughters (19,21, and 25. Dont get me started on her other two sisters )

Now a couple months later the church finds out that my fiancee is pregnant and not married so what do they do... FIRE HER!!! There is no way in hell she could have gotten another job and even if she by some miracle did she wouldnt have transportation to get there. I know most of you would tell me I should pay for everything but I am in and out of jobs with the economy and right now im working for a friend that owns a metal fab shop for $10 an hour and im lucky if I work 2 days a week. I have about $20,000 in debt (Yea stupid I know but I was young and had to have that streetbike and ATV and credit card and now im paying for it I still owe too much on both of them and havent been able to sell them)

She had already applied for social security numerous times for her disability but they wont pay her a penny. So we finally give up and decide to go apply for medacaid. Annnnd guess what, she doesnt qualify because her mom makes too much money and she is still living under her roof (she doesnt make much in all reality and lives paycheck to paycheck) So she calls and ask's them what is wrong and what can she do about it. They tell her the only way she can get it is if she were to move out and show them that she is paying rent (which she obviously cant afford to do with NO money and NO job) So in the end she had to move to my house (Im 23 and live with my parents ) and get a recipt showing them she was paying xxx.xx for rent and food etc.

It angers me to no end to see people that dont deserve assistance and really shouldnt qualify for sh*t getting everything! There is a reason the government has a system in place to help people in NEED. Not just lazy ****s that dont feel like getting off their ass to go get a job. I realize we never should have gotten ourselves into this position in the first place so please dont try to grill me on that but my only reason for writing all this is to let other know how much it disgust me to see these people with their fake nails, designer clothes, weaves, and high end cars getting all kinds of government assistance when there are people out there that REALLY need it but cant get it because theyre white, ohh sorry I meant to say because they "dont qualify".

a friend is a single mother and gets -0- dollars from the babys father. she can barely afford daycare, medical, rent, etc. her car was given to her by her sister. she applied for foodstamps and was denied because she makes too much...wtf?

.. back in the 1970s-80s, the USDA used to purchase excess commodities ( meat, milk, cheese, grains, etc. ) and distribute them to welfare/WIC, disabled people, and the elderly ( in my granddad's case, at the VA Hospital as he was a veteran of WW1 and WW2 ). Those commodities were packaged and canned in generic USDA labels usually with recipes on the side for making meals of the given item.

Then, enter Big Agriculture. You see, the big food companies like Archer Daniels Midland, Con-Agra, Beatrice Foods, Tyson, etc. weren't getting their cut of the food distribution because these were generic commodities that were minimally processed. They successfully lobbied to END the commodities distribution and move toward an end-user system of food stamp/EBT credits at the point of sale. This way, those who used WIC/food stamps, etc. were forced to purchase their products from retailers, not receive real commodities from the USDA. Also, the excess commodities were purchased from FARMERS at fair market prices, so the commodities BROKERS didn't get their speculative cut either.

Be that as it may, it is going under and there is not anything we can do to stop it. The die was cast long ago. That being the case, IMHO not taking advantage of the resources we have available to prepare, now, is poor husbandry on our parts.

To clarify I'm 20K in frivolous debt which I regret horribly, work EVERY CHANCE I GET, and live at home with my parents and my 19 year old blind, unemployed, soon-to-be-welfare-mother girlfriend. And I also dont get and havent asked for any handouts. I was just sharing my disgust for people that do and dont deserve it. Are you saying that my pregnant fiance that cant drive doesnt deserve the least bit of gov assistance? It aint like shes asking for Welfare, food stamps, and section 8 housing. Shes asked for what she NEEDED which was medical insurance.

You can judge me as soon as you find me a better more reliable job Believe me, Ive tried (and am still trying, I may be able to get on with CSX at the begining of the year and that would be amazing).

If you really believe that the system is going under and that you are not going to ever reclaim what you have already put in, not taking it back is is giving others permission to use you like a chump. If you think it is really your money that other people are leeching off and you do not reclaim it, blame yourself when they use you.

If you really, honestly, do think the system is crashing and you do not use every resource to get things in order ahead of the crash, then you are not doing your best.

I thought this board was about survival. Good survivors use the resources that they find they have available.

If the crash comes I want to be around people who have full cupboards. I am sure the soup will taste just as good if it was paid for with food stamps.

Besides, you don't want to put all those nice ladies down at the food stamps office out of work. What would become of them? How would they feed their children?

Yes - tax laws differ from state to state. In some it just means they hold a lien for first payment (ie IF you sell, they get paid). In others it means they have the right to force your house to auction after 2 years unpaid. just happened to be reading an newspaper article about this yesterday.

Here they take it out of your Banking account if not paid by January of the next year or they garnish your wages (if you have any to garnish that is!).
