I've have been looking at gas masks with a NBC filter, and I wonder what is a good mask and why? I have seen a lot of M61 finish masks at a good price and wonder are they good masks?

the old ones will probably save a life with a new cartridge but you pay for what you get. before you invest research how long those cartridges work for after opened, procedures against different gasses, decon, etc. when you realize how hard it is to attack masses with those weapons and how ineffective any mask is, you may rethink your strategy. the only military units that really train for such things are are first responders like gate guards who face terrorism. it shows when you compare there MSA 1000 masks to the old m40 crap everyone else gets.
theres a lot more threats to worry about besides gas, not including bubba and those cans of baked beans you stored in the fallout shelter

Might want to look at these as well.....

I have 4 of each of these masks with NEW filters obtained from Lab Safety Supply as well as other vendors..read the reviews that others have left for these...hope it helps give you an affordable, yet functional and working solution.

They are surplus masks, I'd advise getting new filters but I wouldn't go chunking money at $189.00 masks if a decent surplus one will do the job just as well.

The Isreali Mask just come in a box and may or may not have a drinking tube (all mine I ordered did). A gallon Ziplock bag works well for storage.

The other two came with carry bags. The finnish bag is canvas and has powder and lens wipes. The Czech was an NBC protective vinyl bag, spare eye lenses and caps.

The problems with MOST surplus masks is that the materials that they are made of will deteriorate when exposed to some chemical agents, rendering the mask completely useless as the seal will be broken and the chemicals will bypass the filter killing you!!

The only surplus masks that are still effective against ALL known NBC agents are the Israeli M-15 (less than 20 years old - check the date on the cheek) and the US M-40.

Be wary when purchasing labeled "NEW" production filters (which are the only kinds you should purchase.) Read my post here: http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=54449&highlight=mask

Here is another thread where masks have been talked about at length: http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=53361&highlight=mask

This place sells new style gas masks - you must still be wary when purchasing filters from them, as even the new filters had been on the shelves for years and so do not have as much shelf life remaining as is advertised: http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/

Frankly, if an average person (civvie) is exposed to most military/warfare chemical agents, unless they are protected by an entire NBC suit, properly donned and taped, along with antropine self injectors just in case, the chance of skin/contact absorbtion makes the fact they are wearing a mask moot.

Agreed, but the post did not ask about the other stuff. Personally, if you have the mask and filters, you should have the suit, boots, gloves, wipes, M8 and M9 paper, etc., too.

However, put on an old surplus military mask and walk through a cloud of chlorine gas/mist, phosgene, or ammonia (none of which require a suit to survive, and all of which are possible hazards that a civilian could be exposed to in most areas of the country from industrial and/or traffic/train accidents) and you'll likely suffocate from exposure to the gases due to the seals on the masks failing.

You only have to read the headlines to get the idea:

You just never know when one leak may be a huge issue and break containment.
