Snowcats are becoming more common for private owners (as opposed to professional groomers, SAR teams, law enforcement, petroleum companies drilling in the arctic...).
Screw-drives never caught on. Almost all are now tracked with a couple specialty ones being on over-sized tires.
they'd be bad ass under my samurai, if it wouldn't just roll over like a dog doing tricks. the technology seems like it would be pretty inefficient on anything un-slippery.
There as a attempt at driving from Russia to North America with screw driven amphibious vehicles some years ago, as a proof of concept, I believe... they didn't make it.
about the only terrain I think they might be good in is snow and perhaps some types of swamps. on the highway or rocks they probably wouldn't get far... and would require hearing protection.
I'll take tires!...
